ENG 101                                   Response to Paper #1                                       Spring 2004

In class

Read the copy of the paper Iıve returned to you and then write a paragraph or two about your experience of reading the paper.  Is it easy to understand what you are saying?  Why or why not?  Is it an enjoyable experience?  Why or why not?

After writing the paragraph, do the following:

  1. underline the topic sentence in each paragraph and write CLAIM next to it.
  2. in each paragraph, put an asterisk (*) next to each sentence containing evidence for that paragraphıs topic sentence.
  3. in each paragraph, double underline each sentence related to the evidence.

At home

Type out the paragraph(s) you wrote in class.

Then take the marked copy of the paper Iıve returned to you and put a number (start with 1 and move up consecutively) next to every one of my marks, or comments, on your paper.  On a separate sheet of paper, type out my remarks, then type out a corrected sentence (if appropriate) or a significant response to each of the marks and comments, numbering each one appropriately.  (This will probably require more than one page.)

On the sheet with your typed paragraph(s) from class, include another paragraph or two explaining what you think is my experience of reading your paper.  In doing so, you might consider some of the following questions.

--Would I find the experience rewarding or frustrating?  Why?

--Are the paragraphs organized?

--Do they have claims that are supported by evidence?

--Do they explain how the evidence relates to the claim?

--Are there errors

Staple your page(s) with the numbered responses to the back of your page(s) with your paragraph responses, attach to the back of this packet the paper Iıve returned to you, put your name on the back of the packet, and turn it all in at the beginning of the next class.  Then please choose a time-slot on the sign-up sheet to come by my office for a conversation about your writing.
