Building the Workforce to Protect and Promote the Public's Health

The Department of Public Health recognizes its role in offering students guidance in discovering and pursuing appropriate public health employment opportunities consistent with their goals and passions.

 

1. Creating an Effective Job-Marketing Strategy in Public Health 

This popular document, developed by the Department, now in its 10th printing, is a comprehensive guide to career planning. It is available from TYCO Printing or here:

2. Public Health Expert Network of Mentors (P.H.E.N.O.M.)

Online mentoring is provided by an international group of public health professionals available to students for the purpose of exploring career options and opportunities. P.H.E.N.O.M is the creation of the founder of the Department's chapter of the University Alumni Association. http://www.bettycjung.net/Phenom.htm.

 

3. List-Serv

Offered to all students and alumni of the Department, the listserv provides access to job postings sent to the Department and individual faculty. To join the listserv visit the Department's Web site.

 

4. Bettycjung Web site
 
One of the most comprehensive, public health Internet sites. Created by Betty C. Jung, MPH (1994), it offers one-stop shopping for public health, including a comprehensive careers and jobs site that contains the most popular job search engines. 5. The SCSU  Center for Career Services
 
Providing students with the most up-to-date and comprehensive career development tools, the Center for Career Services offers an array of career planning services to help students decide what major to pursue, what career best suits them, or to begin the all important job search process. The mission of the Center is to connect students with their future or in other words, to link employers with students, interns, soon-to-be-graduates, and alumni who can fit the job description and contribute to an agency's success.  Check out their website at: http://www.southernct.edu/careerservices/

 

6. Field Practicum Counseling
 
The importance of the choice of field practicum as an excellent opportunity for potential employment is discussed during the orientation to the internship. Students are encouraged to inquire, as part of the field practicum placement interview, about the future availability of employment. 7. Connecticut Public Health Association (CPHA) Mentoring Program
 
Provides a listing of public health professionals available for discussing career interests and opportunities.  For more information, go to http://www.cpha.info/mentoring.htm.

 

8. Program Administrators and Faculty

9. Guest Lecturers

Students have access to many public health practitioners as part of their course of study.

 

10. Field Practicum and Preceptors
