A story was about the potential influence of young voters in the Nov. 4 election included the views of several Southern students. 

 

"Students will be front and center at the polls on Election Day" -- The Norwalk Hour, Oct. 31, 2008
Southern students helped out at local poll sites during the Nov. 4 election, thanks to a grant awarded to the university from the U.S. Election Assistance Program, a bipartisan organization designed to assist in the administration of U.S. elections. The grant was issued as part of the Help America Vote Act, a federal law passed in 2002 that created election assistance program and required communities to modernize their voting systems.


"Taking out the twinkle: SCSU prof creates device that steadies stellar image in telescope" -- New Haven Register, Sept. 15, 2008
Elliott Horch, assistant professor of physics has created a device called a Differential Speckle Survey Instrument (DSSI), which attaches to a telescope and dramatically improves the crispness of the images. The primary purpose for the creation of the instrument is to better study binary stars, and thereby, better understand our own solar system.

Kimberly Doughty, a graduate student in public health at Southern, is performing research on how customers' eating habits are affected by including the number of calories and grams of fat on a restaurant menu.

A new bachelor's degree program for individuals wishing to make a career change into the nursing field is enabling a group of well-trained students replete with a variety of life experiences to enter the field in a timely manner.

Southern's ConnCAS program has gained a grant of nearly $70,000 for each of the next five years. The grant is designed to enable students underrepresented at the college level (such as minority, low income, and first generation students) to gain access to Southern.

A group of Southern's journalism students, under the direction of Cindy Simoneau, Southern's assistant professor of journalism, conducted a study of the response times of some of the region's police and fire departments and the impact that staff levels in those departments have on the response times.
