CURRENT/FUTURE SPECIFIC RESEARCH PROJECTS:

Retreat From Radicalism: The Liberal Republicans of 1872. This revisionist study investigates the ideological and political reasons why Radical Republicans on the questions of Reconstruction reversed position in 1872 and opposed reelection of Ulysses S. Grant. Research is based on 66 manuscript collections in various archives and upon printed primary materials. The book addresses an outstanding issue and fills a major gap in Reconstruction historiography. Some 125 manuscript pages completed. Under consideration by Louisiana State University Press.

The Unwritten Constitution. A series of scholarly essays on the institutional innovations, legal fictions, reinterpretations of language, and other adaptations of the U. S. Constitution which have permitted that document to retain its dynamic qualities for over 200 years. Topics include the expansion of the bill of rights; the emergence of judicial activism; the invention of federal police power; the rise of presidential power; the role of political parties. Essays are outlined and awaiting prose.
