Research:
Member of the research team of AVANCE: A Study of Latinos and Religion in the United States. This is the largest study ever undertaken of Latinos and religion, with a national sample of 3,306 respondents. The study is being conducted within one denomination, and is sponsored by the Seventh-day Adventist church. The project began in 1992, still on-going. Received grants totaling $100,000. Founding members of PARAL: Program for the Analysis of Religion Among Latinos. Organized in 1988 in Chicago. Awarded $509,000 grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Lily Foundation, resulting in a Conference on Latino Religion at Princeton University, April 1993. Final documents were published in a series of books.
My current research is in three areas: on the impact Latino congregations are having in their respective communities, and on why Latinos are not making it in school, and on the sociology of spirituality of the Spanish mystics.

Spent the summer of 1967 in England working with runaway youth in London.
Consultant to Teacher Corps Associates, and member of an Inter-disciplinary Training Team, University of Wisconsin-Madison. The work involved the conceptualization and design of a Leadership Training Model in Education That Is Multicultural, in order to prepare Teach Corps project staff to better meet the needs of multi-ethnic children from low income families, 1978-79.
Coordinator of Organization Development, Latino Institute, Chicago. The work involved supervising a staff of six employees, and provide technical assistance to Hispanic community organizations so as to improve their delivery of services, 1977-1979.
Spent the summer of 1980 teaching English to Cambodian refugees in Thailand in preparation for their transition to a country of relocation.
Traveled to Spain and Portugal, June 14-July 7, 1994, for pleasure and cultural enriching experience.
Traveled to Japan, under special assignment of the United States Department of Defense, to do training in diversity for the Defense Department Dependent Schools (DoDDS) in the Pacific Region, January 19-February 5, 1995.
Traveled to Bolivia (March 8-12, 2004) to teach a graduate course in “Etica del desarrollo” (Ethics of Development) in Spanish for the Masters Program in International Development for Andrews University, Berrien Springs, MI.

Appeared in a training video produced by IBM for all its employees and executives. August 1993.
Was guest of the Susan Loggins Radio Talk Show out of Chicago, on April 24, 1995, to discuss violence in America, in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing. The invitation came as a result of my published article, “America the Brutal: How did we get to such a state of madness?” published in Christianity Today.
Appeared on the ABC television program, Vision and Values, special segment, “Take Away This Anger,” on children and violence, sponsored by the Episcopal Church. Program aired September 29, 1996.
