CURRENT/FUTURE SPECIFIC RESEARCH PROJECTS:
My current research (the Hearts & Minds educational research project) is a series of pilot studies comparing an electrocardiogram (ECG) series of R-R intervals (the standard procedure for measuring the heart's beat-to-beat intervals exactly) extracted from Holter monitor recordings of children involved in various educational or play activities. Specifically, this research project is designed to explore the emotions children experience as they learn, how different educational processes and activities mediate the experience of emotion, and how these emotions encourage or restrain children's ability to learn. The project builds on previous and present research that seeks to identify characteristic patterns, in the autonomic nervous system, that occur with specific emotions: changes in blood pressure; facial expressions; skin conductance (see Ekman, Izard, Davidson, and others). The objective is to: 1) search for evidence of correlation between particular emotions and patterns of variability in the heart's R-R intervals (RRI --the time between heartbeats) as examined and quantified through recurrence plot analysis (RPA), and 2) consider how these patterns vary among diverse student populations (culture, gender, physical ability, linguistic proficiency).
STUDENT INVOLVEMENT/COLLABORATION lN MY RESEARCH SINCE SPRING 1997:
Valmar Torre-Bruno and Kristen Sepulveda (8th grade students at the West Hills Middle Magnet School in New Haven) have collaborated, as assistants, on my Hearts & Minds educational research project. They learned the use and function of Holter monitors, helped orient Kindergarten children during the experiments, and documented ongoing activities through video tape and observation sheets. Subsequently, Valmar and Kristen designed their own science fair study using Hearts & Minds techniques and technology (recurrence plot analysis --RPA) to compare electrocardiogram (ECG) series of R-R intervals of children playing videogames containing varying levels of violence (from non-violent to extremely voilent).
