Undergraduate Course Requirements

Core Requirements

All students majoring in Recreation and Leisure Studies, regardless of concentration, are required to take the following nine core courses (27 credits):

REC 100 Introduction to Recreation and Leisure - 3 credits

REC 120 Leadership Development - 3 credits

REC 210 Methods and Materials - 3 credits

REC 220 Inclusive Recreation - 3 credits

REC 320 Recreation and Park Programs - 3 credits

REC 301 Internship I - 3 credits

REC 420 Organization and Administration In Leisure - 3 credits

REC 470 Senior Research Methods -3 credits

REC 480 Philosophy of Recreation and Leisure - 3 credits

REC Elective(s) - 3-6 Credits

 

Concentration Requirements

Students must also fulfill the specific course requirements for their area of concentration within the major.  Following are the specific requirements for each concentration:

 

Community Recreation & Youth Development

REC 251 Recreation & Youth Development - 3 credits

REC 321 Advanced Techniques of Program Planning & Management - 3 credits

REC 351 Facility Design & Management - 3 credits

REC 461 Seminar: Commercial Recreation - 3 credits

REC 400 Comm Rec & Youth Dev -Specific Internship - 6 credits

 

Therapeutic Recreation

REC 231 Foundations of Therapeutic Recreation - 3 credits

REC 331 Programming in Therapeutic Recreation - 3 credits

REC 391 Intervention & Facilitation Techniques in TR - 3 credits

REC 431 Current Practices in Therapeutic Recreation - 3 credits

REC 433 Internship in Therapeutic Recreation - 6 credits

 

Travel & Tourism Management

REC 261 Travel and Tourism: Principles and Practices - 3 credits

REC 363 Tourism Planning, Marketing & Promotion - 3 credits

REC 461 Seminar: Commercial Recreation - 3 credits

REC 463 Tourism Impacts, Planning & Management - 3 credits

REC 400 Travel & Tourism Management -Specific Internship - 6 credits

 

Sports Management

REC 271 Introduction to Sports Management - 3 credits

REC 321 Advanced Techniques of Program Planning & Management - 3 credits

REC 457 Seminar: Contemporary Issues in Sports Managements - 3 credits

REC 461 Seminar: Commercial Recreation - 3 credits

REC 400  Sports Management -Specific Internship - 6 credits

 

Departmental Elective requirement

In addition, students complete one course (3 cr) of departmental elective credits.  Following is a list of courses students may elect to take in fulfilling this requirement:

REC 491 Mobile Recreation Workshop - 3 credits

REC 493 Recreation Experimental Laboratiory - 3 credits

REC 499 Independent Study - 3 credits

For more complete descriptions of courses, see the Undergraduate Catalog, published each year. Courses are subject to change from time to time. Not all courses are offered each semester, so students are advised to work closely with their assigned academic advisers from the faculty to assure that courses are scheduled and planned to meet student degree requirements for graduation.

To schedule a meeting with the department's Undergraduate Coordinator students may email panzaj1@southernct.edu or visit the Recreation and Leisure Studies Department offices at Office Building 1 (OB 1), go to office 108 B, and ask for Dr. Panza.

Dr. Panza has regular office hours posted during each semester and is available for appointments or walk-ins as time permits. Summer availability may vary but email is always available.
