southern recycles
Did you know that the average person generates approximately five pounds of garbage per day and 75% of that garbage is recyclable?
At Southern Connecticut State University, we are looking to change how we do business. With almost 2,000 residential students, we potentially produce 10,000 pounds of garbage per day. It is time to change the culture on our campus to one that embraces recycling and looks for alternatives to reducing the waste on campus.
Recycling helps to keep items that can be remanufactured out of the waste stream while reducing pollution and conserving natural resources. Bottles, cans and plastics, cardboard, and mixed paper collection bins are located throughout the campus. These items are brought to a Material Recycling Facility (MRF) where they are sorted partly by hand and partly by machine. Some of the best ways to reduce waste are to purchase products with minimal packaging, reuse food containers, buy in bulk, print on both sides of a sheet of paper, and if drinking from a water bottle, refill it.
Be part of the solution. If you see a bin, toss it in.
