REcyclemania 2012
Congratulations to Brownell Hall the winner of this years Recyclemania competition! Recyclemania is an 8 week, friendly competition where college campuses compete to see how much they can recycle. The school that accumulates the most is the winner. SCSU did an internal competition amongst the Residence Halls and Brownell won the competition for the second year in a row. A celebration is being planned for the winners which will include sweatpants for the first 200 residents that attend.
Over 62,000 pounds of recycling was collected over the 8 week competition and the campus reduced its overall waste by 13% or 70,452 pounds!
SCSU is now SINGLE STREAM
Say goodbye to sorting!
Effective July 1, 2011, paper, bottles, cans and cardboard recycling can be placed in the same recycling bins. Known as "single-stream recycling," SCSU has joined the effort in changing the recycling system to collect common recyclables in the same bin.
To reflect the changes in the recycling program, recycling dumpsters across campus will now be blue coordinating with the existing recycling containers and recycling bins will receive new labels announcing the types of commodities that can be recycled. Label replacement will occur gradually throughout the 2011-2012 academic year. While bins may continue to be labeled "Paper" or "Bottles, Cans & Plastics," the campus community members can place recyclables in either bin.
*Regulated waste (e.g. batteries, bulbs, etc.), confidential items, hazardous waste materials, e-waste (electronics), toner and ink cartridges are not part of this program but should continue to be recycled. Initiatives At Work
Over the past year, the Recycling Center has made great strides for the betterment of our campus community. New initiatives have been put into effect and are beginning to yield positive results from the data we have collected.

These are the yearly totals of bottles, cans, and plastic containers that have been recycled in tons. The decrease in tons over the past eight years can be contributed to the ever growing awareness of a greener environment. Students have cut back on the consumption of retail beverage containers and are now more inclined to use reusable drink containers.
This data has been collected for the year of 2009-2010. It gives you a month to month break down of our bottle, can, and plastic recycling over the course of a full year. In the months of June, July, and August our levels of recyclables is low. This is due to the lack of students on campus because of summer break. During the fall and spring months, there is a large spike of recyclables.
Our cardboard recycling has grown significantly since 2002. We have cut back the amount of paper that ends up in the waste stream that is recyclable. We have made cardboard specific dumpsters available all around campus as well as paper recycling bins in every office and every classroom. We hope the great work continues.
