What is a selection of degree form and where do I get one?

A selection of degree is a form that declares a students major. Students must fill out the form and have it signed by the advisor in your department. Once it has been signed, you should return it to the Registrar's Office. This is very important now that we offer the online degree evaluation also known as CAPP. The online degree evaluation will produce an evaluation for the latest selection of degree entered in BANNER, students who have changed majors frequently should make sure their major is correct in Banner. To download a PDF version of the Selection of Degree forms click on the links below. (Education majors must use the Education Selection of Degree form)

Do I need to apply for graduation/degree?

YES! Any student in his/her second to last semester must complete the on-line degree application. The deadlines for undergraduate submission are as follows:

» Friday, November 10, 2006 to receive a degree in May 2007.
» Friday, April 13, 2007 to receive a degree in August 2007.
» Friday, June 8, 2007 to receive a degree in January 2008.

Undergraduate students missing these deadlines will have to wait until the next time the degrees are issued and must reapply on the web. Students seeking certification must also obtain and submit an Application for Certification.

Degrees are awarded 3 times a year- January, May, and August. There is no formal commencement at the end of the fall or summer terms. However students completing degree requirements in the summer or fall may participate in the commencement held the following May. All students who receive degrees will have their degrees mailed to the address submitted on the degree application. If you have changed addresses since the time that you filled out your application and need to have your diploma address updated you may do so by filling out a Change of Student Info form and be sure to check off the box that reads, check here to change diploma address if you have applied for graduation.

I applied for my graduation/degree online.  How will I know the status of my application?

After you apply online for graduation/degree you will receive a letter from The Registrar's Office that will either tell you that you are OK for graduation or it will list your problems for graduation. These letters are mailed out after the application deadline is over. To view the application deadlines and when letters will go out click here. If you do not receive a letter by the date listed in the table then it is safe to assume that your application was not received and you should contact the Registrar's Office as soon as possible. Check the Who To Call By Topic link to find the number of the staff member that handles the letter of your last name.

How do I get Pre-Req permission for a course?

If you try to register on-line for a course and are unable to register because of PRE-REQ permission, it means that you have not taken a prior course needed in order to register. If you get the PRE-REQ error when registering, and you feel that you do have the pre-requisite required to take the course then you should contact the department and have them enter the PRE-REQ permission in Banner. Once that has been done, the student should be able to go on-line and register for the desired course.

What is an alternate PIN number?

Before a student can register on the BANNER web system they must meet with their advisor for consultation on their courses for the next semester.  During the meeting the advisor issues the student an alternate PIN for use on the system.  The purpose of this alternate pin number is to ensure that students register in their allocated time frame.  This PIN is not used to logon to BANNER Web.  The alternate pin is only entered when prompted to do so before you can register.

I want to take a course at another institution and transfer it to SCSU.  How do I start?

Before you register for a course at another University you must fill out a Transfer Credit Approval Form and submit it to the Registrar's Office with the course descriptions attached. All English, Mathematics, Business, and Biology courses need prior approval from the respective departments before you return the form to the Registrar's Office.  Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 before any courses will be transferred in. Once you submit the form it will be either approved or rejected and you will receive a copy of the form in the mail. If the transfer course is approved, the student should send a copy of their transcript from the other university with the graded course to the Registrar's Office to be added to their SCSU transcript. When waiting for a course to be added to your transcript, please check your unofficial transcript on SCSU Web Services. Once a course is added to your transcript it shows up on the web immediately.
