Moving into a Residence Hall

Moving into a residence hall doesn't have to be stressful. Knowing what to bring ahead of time helps alleviate stress and can dramatically speed up moving-in time.

Move-in Days

  •     August 26th: New Student Move-In (first-year students and new transfers)
  •     August 28th: Returning Student Move-In (students entering their second+ year and both new/returning graduate students)

*Move-in times are staggered to manage traffic and crowding to create a smooth move-in process. Students will be able to select a move-in time online through their My Housing Portal beginning on August 17th thru August 24th at 4pm.

To select a move-in time, you must be fully compliant with the university:

  •     Matriculated and registered for at least 6 course credits for the fall 2023
  •     Health compliant with an up-to-date health record (including all immunizations)
  •     Financially compliant with an up-to-date payment plan or balance paid in full
  •     Complete check-in forms located on your MyHousing Portal. (Available now).

Early move-in application will be open August 1st-17th. Students who need to move in prior to the start of the semester for University sponsored events, programs and employment must complete the early move in application. The fee for early move in is $40 per night. Student employees are eligible for a discounted rate of $16.50.  The application can be found in the applications tab of your MyHousing portal. 

You can visit your MyHousing Portal to select your move-in time beginning August 17th thru August 24th at 4:00pm. Sign-ups are located under “Assignments” on the main page of your MyHousing Portal. We have a maximum capacity for each sign-up block to allow for a streamlined move-in experience.

  •     Complete check-in forms located on your MyHousing Portal. (Available now).

 

The following are suggested items to bring to campus. We recommend talking to your roommate, if applicable, to avoid duplicating items that can be shared (i.e., television).

  • alarm clock
  • area rug or room carpet (see the Residence Life brochure for average room sizes per building)
  • backpack
  • clothes hangers
  • computer (don't forget a lock for laptops)*
  • dishes, cups, silverware
  • fan* (a rectangular window fan or standard box fan)
  • iron***
  • keurigs or automatic shut-off coffee pots***
  • laundry detergent and basket
  • pens, pencils, notebooks, and other school supplies
  • pillow, bedding, mattress cover (twin extra-long)
  • outlet surge protectors*
  • room decorations
  • shower tote, robe, shower sandals
  • small garbage can
  • stapler, scissors, paper clips, tape
  • tissues and paper towels
  • toothbrush, toothpaste and other toiletries
  • towels
  • TV
  • umbrella

Optional Renter Insurance

All residents may also want to opt into the optional rental insurance.

Students can request renter's insurance provided by GradGuard through the check in form online in their MyHousing.

 

Apartment and Suite Residents

Apartment and Suite residents may also want to bring the following.

  • bath mat
  • bathroom cleaning supplies
  • pots, pans, cooking utensils
  • toilet paper
  • shower curtains

Rooms with Kitchens

If you will be living in a room with a kitchen, you should also consider bringing these items.

  • cups, glasses, and plates
  • eating utensils
  • a toaster
  • cookware
  • dishwasher liquid
  • cooking utensils

Please consult your residence hall director if you wish to bring an item that is not listed above; certain items are prohibited for health and safety reasons. Also, please remember that space is limited so pack sparingly and consult with your roommate(s) to avoid bringing duplicate items.

*All appliances must be UL approve/listed
***May only be used in utility rooms or rooms with kitchens

Items prohibited from residence halls at Southern include but are not limited to the following. Please refer to the Guide to Living on Campus for a comprehensive list of restricted items.

  • Air conditioners*, microwaves, refrigerators, cable boxes
  • Alcohol, illegal drugs or paraphernalia
  • Candles and incense
  • Clothes washers or dryers
  • Curtains
  • Dart boards with metal tip darts
  • Electronic skateboards/scooters/hoverboards
  • Extension cords
  • Halogen lamps
  • Hot plates
  • Mattresses, futons, beds, sofas/couches
  • Pets (only fish allowed)
  • Space heaters
  • Weapons (guns, hunting knives, nunchucks, blow darts)

*We strongly encourage students to bring window or box fans if they are living in a residence hall without air conditioning. Temperatures can creep up during the first few weeks of the semester during the day, though evening and nighttime temperatures offer a chance for the building to cool off. Respite areas are spaces where students can take a break during the warmer daytime hours; respite areas available to residential students include the Farnham Programming Space, Connecticut Hall, the Adanti Student Center, and Buley Library.

SCSU, in partnership with Comcast, offers wi-fi in all residence halls. Students can stay connected, stream video or music, and search for the information they need for free. The wi-fi service includes 2.4 and 5 GHz bandwidth, providing fast Internet access on all devices.
