Careers in Sociology

If you are a student majoring in Sociology who is wondering, "What in the world can I do with a Sociology degree?" then you have come to the right place. To start with, review the Amerian Sociological Association's site: Careers in Sociology. This site has information for undergraduate and graduate students, Job Prospects for the BA Graduate, Graduate Training in Sociology, and so on. This is a definite starting place for anyone wondering what to do after receiving a degree, whether graduate or undergraduate, in sociology.

American Sociological Association Study

Students from Southern Connecticut State University's sociology program recently participated in a national study conducted by the American Sociological Association. Information on the study and its findings may be found at "What Can I Do With a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology?" The study results are quite interesting and you are encouraged to review the findings for insight into how YOU might prepare yourself for a career working with a degree in sociology.

Embarking on the Job or Career Search

Take a good hard look at yourself and the courses you've taken. What types of things interested you the most? Where do your strengths and weaknesses lie? This may be a hard question to ask, however, it is better to ask yourself now before you begin something you may not want to finish.

Keep in mind that there are a variety of job and career opportunities for someone with a bachelor's degree in sociology. There are also specialized positions for sociology students who have a master's degree. Because our sociology program does not offer a doctorate degree, we won't discuss positions associated with a Ph.D. just yet.

There are many sources of information available to you for help in looking for possible job openings and career choices. For example, the ASA has a site "Preparation for Careers" that provides a number of suggestions for students. The site also includes links to additional information on the B.S./B.A. major in sociology and what employer's are looking for. This site is highly recommended. To get an idea of possible job openings and career choices, why not check the newspaper? Not just the classifieds, but newspaper articles. You should also watch the local news channels to find what the projected employment outlook will be in your area of interest. You can never tell what you may find so keep your eyes and ears open for new information.

The Department of Sociology has a number of flyers and brochures available for your perusal. These will give you an idea of the variety of career opportunities that exist for majors in sociology. Job announcements are posted on the bulletin board next to the main office (EN C011A). Brochures are in the display shelf in the main office. You may also want to speak with your faculty advisor for direction. The Department may also send out e-mails from time to time with job announcements.

One of the best ways to find out about job opportunities and whether or not you are qualified is to go to a respected source. Begin with the SCSU Center for Career Services (Schwartz Hall 102). The Center for Career Services office offers lots of valuable information to help you in your job/career search. They offer services such as a career resource library, career resource computer lab, information on resume writing, cover letters, job opportunities, mock interviews, and workshops. You may find of particular interest, career counseling, workshops, the speaker's bureau, and the career fairs that are held every Fall and Spring semester.

You might also regularly check employment opportunities through the State of Connecticut
