WHAT IS THE WORLD LANGUAGE requirement?

Beginning in Fall 2011, Southern students will be required to reach an Intermediate Low Proficiency level in a foreign language by completing the third level of a foreign language or demonstrate knowledge via a STAMP test (Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency) or an equivalent.

Students admitted prior to Fall 2011 are required to take at least three credits in a foreign language as part of the general education requirements to prove a defined written and oral proficiency in a world language, a level II proficiency for students in a bachelor of science program and a level-IV proficiency for students in a bachelor of arts program.  Students can prove their proficiency by taking the world language placement and taking the appropriate courses or by taking the waiver exam.

DO I NEED TO TAKE THE PLACEMENT/STAMP TEST/waiver exam?

Students admitted in Fall 2011 who have studied two years or more of a foreign language in high school must take the online placement prior to Orientation unless already proficient in a foreign language.  Students who are already proficient in a foreign language may take a STAMP test beginning in late August.  Details regarding the STAMP test will be posted later in the summer.  Please check back.

Students admitted prior to Fall 2011 who have studied two or more years of foreign langauge in high school may either take the online placement or place themselves based on their high school experience using the following guidelines:

Level II (i.e. SPA 101):  completion of 2 years of high school language with a B or better

Level III (i.e. SPA 200):  completion of 3 to 4 years of high school language with a B or better

Level IV (i.e. SPA 210):  completion of 4 years of high school language or more with all A's or Heritage Speaker

Students with a certified language learning disability are provided substitution courses through the Disability Resource Center which may be contacted by calling 203.392.6829.

WHAT IS THE FORMAT OF THE placement/STAMP test/waiver exam?

The placement is an online self-assessment tool to assist you in placing yourself in the appropriate World Language course.  You will be presented with individual concrete situations which you might encounter in the World Language of your choice and asked to reflect on your ability to comprehend or to produce language in the individual situation.  Occassionally, we provide examples to help clarify the situation or the expectation of your language production.  Always, we ask you to honestly assess your ability and choose one of the alternatives provided.

The waiver exam consists of multiple-choice questions that test grammar, vocabulary, situational phrases, and reading comprehension. It takes about 75 minutes.  Students who test high on the exam will have an opportunity to waive foreign language for credit by taking an oral exam.  Students can take the oral exam during the spring or fall semesters, depending on when they take the exam and faculty availability.
