Freshman Leadership Experience

The Freshman Leadership Experience program offers first-year students (freshmen) an opportunity to explore leadership theories, develop leadership skills and practice leadership through programs, workshops and projects.

All freshmen students are invited to apply to the program.

What is the FLEX program?

The FLEX Program is a 6-week leadership program for freshmen. One of the cornerstones of the program is that it kicks off before the start of the academic year, allowing you to meet and make connections with a diverse group of like-minded individuals prior to classes beginning! This means that the program will begin prior to the start of New Owl Weekend.

During the program, participants will explore their leadership potential, participate in meaningful leadership experiences, interact with current student leaders, faculty and staff, and discuss topics that will help you succeed at the university, both in-and-out of the classroom.  The program will explore topics such as values, relationships, goal setting, involvement and much more. Not only is this program a first step into your leadership experience at SCSU, but FLiP also provides great opportunities to get connected with peers, and to create meaningful relationships right from the start! Oh, and did we mention… we will have lots of FUN along the way!

I will be living on campus, can I move-in early to participate?
Yes! All residential students participating in FLiP will be given permission to move in the morning of Monday, August 21st.

Are there other program expectations?
Traditionally, FLEX students have become some of our most active and involved leaders! In order to introduce you to different involvement opportunities, FLEX participants will be encouraged to participate in various campus events during their first semester, and are required to attend and reflect on a minimum of three events.

Is there a fee?
Yes. There is a $35 fee associated with the FLEX Program. This fee will cover the cost of meals on August 25th and August 26th as well as an afternoon of team-building activities. If paying this fee presents a financial hardship, the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Development has created a fund that can assist in covering the $35 fee as noted on the application.
