First-Year Student Leaders in Progress

The First-Year Student Leaders in Progress (F.L.i.P.) program offers first-year students (freshmen) an opportunity to explore leadership theories, develop leadership skills and practice leadership through programs, workshops and projects.

All freshmen students are invited to apply to the program.

All freshmen students have received the below e-mail with information about the FLiP Program to their SCSU Owls E-mail Account:

Dear New Students,

While you were on campus for New Student Orientation, you learned about many great opportunities that you could take advantage of to become active and involved on SCSU's campus. We hope that you have spent these past few weeks thinking about which opportunities are of most interest to you and that you are making a plan to "Choose One" when you arrive on campus! Please remember that the staff in the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Development will be available to assist you, as you begin your college experience!

One of the opportunities that you likely heard about during New Student Orientation was our FLiP Program. FLiP (First-Year Leaders in Progress), is our freshman Student Leadership Program, and we are writing you to invite you to apply for this opportunity!

What is the FLiP program?

The FLiP Program is a 6-week leadership program for freshmen. One of the cornerstones of the program is that it kicks off before the start of the academic year, allowing you to meet and make connections with a diverse group of like-minded individuals prior to classes beginning! This means that the program will begin prior to the start of New Owl Weekend.

During the program, participants will explore their leadership potential, participate in meaningful leadership experiences, interact with current student leaders, faculty and staff, and discuss topics that will help you succeed at the university, both in-and-out of the classroom.  The program will explore topics such as values, relationships, goal setting, involvement and much more. Not only is this program a first step into your leadership experience at SCSU, but FLiP also provides great opportunities to get connected with peers, and to create meaningful relationships right from the start! Oh, and did we mention… we will have lots of FUN along the way!

When is the program held?

Monday, August 24th from 7:00pm –9:00pm
Tuesday, August 25th from 8:30am-8:00pm
Wednesday, August 26th from 9:00am-5:00pm

Upon the start of the semester, FLiP will meet once a week for 6 weeks for approximately 60-90 minutes. Meeting times will be scheduled around members classes and availability indicated on your application.

 FLiP FAQ's

I will be living on campus, can I move-in early to participate?
Yes! All residential students participating in FLiP will be given permission to move in the afternoon of August 24th.

Are there other program expectations?
Traditionally, FLiP students have become some of our most active and involved leaders! In order to introduce you to different involvement opportunities, FLiP participants will be encouraged to participate in various campus events during their first semester, and are required to attend and reflect on a minimum of three events.

Is there a fee?
Yes. There is a $35 fee associated with the FLiP Program. This fee will cover the cost of meals on August 25th and August 26th as well as an afternoon of team-building activities. If paying this fee presents a financial hardship, the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership Development has created a fund that can assist in covering the $35 fee as noted on the application.
