How would you like to take your love of the great outdoors and your keen interest in science and explore the exciting possibilities?
The earth science department at Southern offers a solid foundation in earth science, combined with specialized programs in geology, oceanography, meteorology, and environmental earth science. Students benefit from rigorous academic training and extensive hands-on field experience, gaining the scientific knowledge for careers or graduate study.
Using up-to-date computer programs, students might interpret and predict weather or create maps and models of the ocean floor. They might also trek out into the field, to the salt marshes of Long Island Sound to study the beach environment or the tides.
A hurricane chaser, a petroleum geologist, a forecaster for the National Weather Service - they all got their start in Southern's earth science program. Many earth science graduates also make their mark as secondary school teachers.
Opportunities also exist in science-related fields like science writing, environmental law, and technical sales. Students who opt to work toward the B.A. in earth science find careers in these areas.
Geology
Southern's program offers all of the requirements outlined by the United States Geologic Survey (USGS). Courses focus on geology from engineering, structural, and economic perspectives. Students also gain valuable training on equipment like spectrometers and petrographic microscopes.
Oceanography
Southern's program offers all the requirements outlined by the United States Geologic Survey (USGS). Students delve into areas like geomorphology, stratigraphy, and sedimentation, and engage in valuable field work in the rich environment of nearby Long Island Sound.
Meteorology
Students interested in meteorology gain a solid foundation in the principles of weather forecasting, using computer, satellite and radar technology. Also covered are air pollution meteorology and analysis of world climates.
Environmental Earth Science
This specialization provides an overview of environmental concerns and land use, with courses focusing on such environmental areas as soil science, air pollution, hydrology and geologic factors that influence engineering practice.
