In today's job market, no one is more sought after than the computer expert. Where they work -- the kind of company or institution -- is limited only by their imaginations. The work itself calls for precision and creativity, logic and ingenuity. Computer scientists must think abstractly, work independently, and yet be team players who can communicate well with clients and colleagues.

Southern's department of computer science has been educating top-notch computer science professionals for decades. Because of its pioneering history and its reputation for excellence, the department was recently granted "Distinctiveness Status" by the Connecticut State University System, which means it's one of the elite programs in the state.

At Southern, computer science students gain valuable experience in Unix, PC, and Mac platforms, working in the University's outstanding computer laboratory facilities located around campus. The labs are continually updated, giving students exposure to cutting-edge computing that the field demands.

The scope and depth of the computer science department is reflected in the array of faculty research interests, including artificial intelligence, computer security, image processing, computer networking, and computer graphics. The department also gives majors the flexibility to pursue a general program in computer science or a program targeted at computer information systems. And the Computer Science Club provides students with a venue for extracurricular skill-building.

Southern students also have the benefit of taking classes in related fields, drawing from the wide array of offerings in Southern's other academic schools.

Students earning the B.S. in general computer science are well prepared for either professional careers or for graduate study. This program in computer science is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012; telephone (410) 347-7700.

Students earning the B.S. in computer information systems learn the computer applications they will need to establish themselves successfully in the business world.
