Donations Wanted for Domestic Violence Safe Houses!
Dear Southern Community,
We are collecting new toiletries (soap, toothpaste, etc.) that will be donated to the Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services (UCDVS) emergency safe houses. The UCDVS is the New Haven service provider. Donations can be brought to the Violence Prevention, Victim Advocacy, and Support Center (VPAS) located in Schwartz Hall, Room 001, at any time between 8:30am and 4:30pm, as the collection of new toiletries will be ongoing.
- Domestic Violence is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion or nationality.
- Domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among families in the United States. Research shows that housing is one of the main needs identified by victims/survivors at the same time of shelter entry.
- In 2016, 2,325 victims/survivors were housed in safe houses or emergency shelter in Connecticut and the times of stay is lengthening due to the increase in acute problems including physical health, mental health and immigration.
