Genocide in Darfur

Eric Reeves, a professor at Smith College, has written and published extensively on Sudan for the past Darfur Flyereight years. He is  the author of a new book entitled A Long Day's Dying: Critical Moments in the Darfur Genocide. He has served as a researcher and consultant to numerous human rights and humanitarian organizations working in Sudan, and has testified formally on Sudan in a variety of governmental fora, including several Congressional hearings. His publications have appeared in The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The International Herald Tribune, and major American metropolitan newspapers, as well as international newspapers and journals.  Longer essays on Sudan have appeared in Dissent, The Nation, Human Rights Review and African Studies Review. He serves on the Advisory Board of the US Committee for Refugees (Washington, DC); the Board of Advisors for Genocide Watch and The International Campaign to End Genocide; the Board of Advisors to the Darfur Peace and Development Association; and is a director of the "Schools for Sudan" initiative. He is regularly asked to provide expert commentary on Sudan to the BBC, Radio France International, PBS, NPR, as well as to the major international news services and the foreign correspondents for a wide range of newspaper publications. He is also presently at work on a book-length study of American and international policy responses to Sudan over the last decade. He maintains the groundbreaking website: http://www.sudanreeves.org/
A limited number of Dr. Reeves' book, A Long Day's Dying: Critical Moments in the Darfur Genocide, will be available for purchase and signing.

Pinwheels for Peace

Pinwheels for PeaceIn observance of International Peace Day, students will create pinwheels of all shapes and sizes. As part of the creation process, the students will write their thoughts about "war and peace/tolerance/ living in harmony with others" on one side. On the other side, the students will draw, paint, or collage to visually express their feelings. Everyone will "plant" their pinwheels outside at the campus mall as a public statement and art exhibit/installation. The spinning of the pinwheels in the wind will spread thoughts and feelings about peace throughout the country and the world! Co-sponsored by the Women's Center, Amnesty International, and H.O.P.E. Women & Work/Life Balance Conference

Carol Evans--founder, chief executive officer, and president of Working Mother Media--will be the keynote speaker at the second annual Women and Work-Life Balance Conference.

Evans, author of the award-winning book This is How We Do It: The Working Mothers' Manifesto, has also been the publisher of Working Mother magazine, where she launched the Working Mother 100 Best Companies, arguably the most important benchmark for women in corporate America. Since founding Working Mother Media, Evans has announced several new initiatives including Best Companies for Women of Color, NAFE Top Companies for Executive Women, Best Small Companies for Women, Best Law Firms for Women and Balance Seekers.  Working Mother Media is the largest multimedia company in the country focused on diversity and the advancement of women.

In addition to Evans' address, the conference will also include a discussion, opportunities for networking, and lunch.

In observation of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, visit the information table to learn more about domestic violence, and play Healthy Relationships Jeopardy for a chance to win a gift certificate to a local restaurant. There will also be a collection for items that will be donated to Domestic Violence Services of Greater New Haven. Items that are needed include: unexpired, unopened, non-perishable food items, full-size unopened toiletries, health and beauty aids, and household cleaning products. There will also be a donation box for used cell phones that will be donated to domestic violence survivors. She discovers that 24 out of the 40 Angela Sheltons she spoke to had been survivors of rape, childhood sexual abuse and/or domestic violence. This multi-award winning documentary has started a grassroots movement of healing for survivors of abuse of all genders. Clothesline Project

and Silent Witness Display

The Clothesline Project displays shirts from the Connecticut Coalition against Domestic Violence that were  designed by survivors of violence, and their families Clothesline Projectand friends. The shirts hang side-by-side to "Break the Silence" and to bear witness to violence against women.

The Silent Witness Project is a traveling memorial honoring women who were murdered in acts of domestic violence. Please feel free to visit!

RECEPTION AND BOOK SIGNING TO FOLLOW

Over the past decade, more than 350 women around the city of Juarez, Mexico
have been raped and murdered.The remains of these brutalized young women continue to be found scattered in the parched desert, vacant city lots, and roadside ditches. Others are never found.

Join us for a lecture by Dr. Marjorie Agosin. Dr. Marjorie Agosin, professor of Spanish at Wellesley College and internationally recognized poet will present a lecture on her most recent book, Secrets in the Sand. A native of Chile, Dr. Agosin received the United Nations Human Rights Award in 1998. In her latest work, she examines the serial murders of over 400 women in the bordertown of Juarez where young women come to work in the maquiladoras (off-shore industrial plants). Her other books include Toward the Splendid City, Scraps of Life: Chilean Arpilleras and A Cross and A Star.

Join speakers Dr. Donna Wagner from Towson University and Julia Evans-Starr, the executive director of the Commission on Aging for a frank discussion on long-term health care. Share your thoughts and experiences with an open forum and learn what is being done on long-term.

Dr. Donna Wagner is the founding director of the Center for Productive Aging and the academic gerontology program at Towson University in Towson, Maryland. Dr. Wagner's research includes an examination of the effectiveness of workplace eldercare programs.

The Village of POWER, a local organization, provides African American women who are homeless, unemployed and in recovery with comprehensive services that are designed to heal their life issues. They offer a Replenishment Center with case managers, spiritual groups, relapse prevention, wellness education, medical, psychiatric and recovery services, emergency food and clothes, socialization, fellowship, and vocational training and housing.

In the Growing through Sewing program, classes in jewelry, clothing, handbags, shawls, scarves, blankets and curtains, quilting, t-shirts, leather working are held daily.
