Make It/Take It: Crafting with the Women of the Village of Power

Village of PowerJoin the women of the Village of Power, a local organization that provides African American women who are homeless, unemployed and in recovery with comprehensive services that are designed to heal their life issues. Women will assist students in crafting items such as key chains, jewelry, and scarves. All crafts are free of charge. Join Gina McDonald from the Renfrew Center for a discussion on eating disorders. The Renfrew Center is a women's mental health center as well as a nationwide professional resource network. They specialize in the treatment of eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder), trauma, anxiety, depression, and other women's issues. Gina Macdonald, M. A., LPC., is a licensed professional counselor who has 16 years of experience working in hospital and treatment centers in Eating Disorder Programs. Her area of focus while attending Lesley College Graduate School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was the treatment of body-image dissatisfaction and distortion through expressive therapy (an area of focus while attending Lesley College Graduate School, Cambridge Massachusetts) along with Cognitive/Behavioral Therapy is the approach she provides in her private practice here in Branford, CT.  Co-sponsored by the Women's Center, the Drug and Alcohol Center, the Fitness Center, and the Renfrew Center.

My Gun's Bigger Than Yours: Images of Manhood and Violence in the Media

Jackson Katz, one of America's leading anti-sexist male activists will present this slide-lecture which is regularly updated with images from popular culture. It is presented in an interactive style where the audience has the opportunity to participate in dialogue about the images presented. Subjects covered include professional wrestling, sports, Hollywood film, advertising, and music videos.

An educator, author and filmmaker, Katz is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in the field of gender violence prevention education with men and boys, particularly in the sports culture and the military. He has lectured on hundreds of college and high school campuses and has conducted hundreds of professional trainings, seminars, and workshops in the U.S., Canada, Australia and Japan. He is the co-founder of the Mentors In Violence Prevention (MVP) Program, the leading gender violence prevention initiative in professional and college athletics. He is the director of the first worldwide domestic and sexual violence prevention program in the United States Marine Corps. He is also the creator and co-creator of educational videos for college and high school students, including Tough Guise: Violence, Media, and the Crisis in Masculinity (2000), Wrestling With Manhood (2002) and Spin the Bottle: Sex, Lies and Alcohol (2004). His new book, The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help, was published by Sourcebooks in 2006.

Tickets will be available for Fashionable Fundraiser: The Feminist Way, a feminist fashion show designed to inspire positive self and body images among women and girls while raising funds for the American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Research.

Katherine Wiltshire, Executive Director of the Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame, welcomes the SCSU community to an Open House Reception at the CWHF's Schwartz Hall Office.  The CWHF recently relocated to the Southern Connecticut State University campus from the University of Hartford to continue its research and educational mission on the lives of Connecticut women of historical accomplishment. Southern Connecticut State University's Iota Iota Iota, Kappa Chapter of the National Women Studies Honor Society will present a benefit production of Eve Ensler's award-winning play, "The Vagina Monologues." This benefit production is co-sponsored by the Women's Studies Program and the Women's Center. The performances are part of V-DAY SCSU, Southern's participation in the V-Day 2007 College Campaign, the global effort to stop violence against women and girls. SCSU Senior and Resident Advisor Meghan Marino examines socially constructed standards of femininity in this power point presentation, submitted as her Honors Thesis in Photography and Media Studies. Through the visual exploration of women's physical appearance in contemporary American society, Meghan Marino tries to clarify for herself and the viewers the ideas and rituals of female beautification today.

The Women's Center has invited the Purple People back to campus to ask you two questions: 1) What is most important to you in a relationship? 2) What do you dislike most in a relationship? There will be cutouts of the Purple People on which students can share their answers. Students may sign their names or remain anonymous. The Purple People will then be displayed across campus in order to create awareness on healthy relationships. Information on healthy and unhealthy relationships will be available.

Iota Iota Iota and Community Outreach: Clothing DriveProfessional Clothing Drive for Women

Spring Cleaning? Have extra professional clothing? Donate it! SCSU's KAPPA Chapter of Iota Iota Iota (Triota), the Women's Studies National Honor Society is holding a professional clothing drive. We are asking for COMPLETE women's outfits* (e.g. jacket, pants, shoes, scarf) all sizes, all seasons, to give to women who need professional work clothing. *All clothing must be dry cleaned and presented on hangers, shoes must be polished and placed in a bag or shoe box. This spring, we will invite women from New Haven to receive the donated outfits, work on resume skills, and build community with the Triota group. Co-sponsored by Career Services. Take Back the Night

Featuring keynote speaker, State Representative Deborah Heinrich, Take Take Back the NightBack the Night is an annual international rally and march that is organized in local communities across the country with the purpose of unifying women and men against sexual assault and violence against women, men and children. Take Back the Night began in England as a protest against the fear of violence that women experience when walking the streets at night. Fashionable Fundraiser: The Feminist Way

The Southern Connecticut State University Women's Studies Program, the fashionable fundraisingWomen's Center, Omega Zeta Pi Sorority and Iota Iota Iota, the Kappa Chapter of the National Women's Studies Honor Society will host a feminist fashion show designed to inspire positive self and body images among women and girls while raising funds for the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research.

Ms. Jill L. Bassett, Women's Studies MA candidate, has created an innovative feminist fashion show which will feature more than 40 women and girls as positive subjects rather than one-dimensional objects for the fashion industry. The fashion show is a creative way for the community to see how the fashion industry is constructed by commercial values and patriarchal standards and will be accompanied by a slideshow demonstration of some of the unhealthy and impractical fashion standards placed on women.  In contrast, the women and girls will model their most comfortable attire while photos of their personal life journey will be projected as the models are introduced for their accomplishments and beauty regardless of race, size, age, sexuality and background.

The tickets for this event are $10 and all proceeds go the American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Research. Tickets will be sold at the SCSU Women's Studies Office and the SCSU Women's Center. Please call (203) 392-6133 or (203) 392-6946 for more information.
