The Scanning icon is in the taskbar. It looks like this, but
without the words:

From the menu of the main GIMP window, choose Xtns...Acquire
Image...Scanning (iscan) (as shown here). Put your document or other item
to be scanned in the scanner. Press the Preview button, located
near the upper left corner of the iscan window (as shown here).
Select the region from the image preview you would like to scan
by clicking and dragging a rectangle around the region (as shown here). Choose
the image type and resolution using the drop-down boxes toward the
upper right portion of the iscan window (as shown here). Press the
Scan button, located beneath the image preview (as shown here). You should
see the results of the scan in a separate window.

3) Save your scanned image

To save your scanned image, right click the image itself. A menu
will pop up at the point of clicking. Choose File...Save As... to
get a file save dialog box (as shown here). UPDATE:
You may also simply choose File...Save As... from the menu of the
image window. Use the dialog box to choose a
directory and filename for your image. IMPORTANT: You must
choose a file type. This can be done in 2 ways. First,
leave
the default (By Extension) and use a standard file extension in your
filename. For example myscan.gif or myscan.jpg or myscan.bmp.
Else type a name like myscan, or dog, or diskette, THEN choose a
file type from the drop down list next to the words "Determine File
Type:" the GIMP will add the proper extension for you. When
you are done selecting a filename and directory, click the OK button
and
the image will be saved.
