Question:
How do I save my work when using KNOPPIX?
Answer: You need to create a persistent KNOPPIX image on a USB memory stick (USB key, thumb drive).  Here is how it's done.  Start KNOPPIX as usual.  Plug your memory stick in.

Choose "Create a persistent KNOPPIX disk image" from the penguin menu, under "Configure":

Click Yes:

Select your memory stick, the one labeled USB:

Click No:

The default, 100 MB, may or may not be adequate.  If you have a smaller memory stick, then choose a smaller size, but make it at least 32 MB.  Any less is useless.  If you do not have this much room to spare on your memory stick, then you should purchase a new one for this purpose or delete some of your files.  If you will be creating large files or numerous smaller ones, you may want to create a larger home directory.  When you have chosen a size for your home directory, and clicked OK, be patient.  It will take several minutes to format your memory stick:

IMPORTANT:

When your home directory has been formatted, restart KNOPPIX!  Now, when knoppix is started with your USB key plugged in, you will get a "KNOPPIX-CONFIGURATION" screen during startup.  This is the screen with the blue background and a gray dialog box in the middle of the screen.  You need to
  1. Deselect the system option (use the down arrow to highlight it and then the space bar to deselect it).
  2. Deselect the init option (again, use the down arrow and space bar).
  3. Press the Tab button once to highlight OK.
  4. Press Enter (Return).
If this configuration screen does not appear during startup, then KNOPPIX has not detected your persistent image, and you need to restart.

Each time you restart KNOPPIX, make sure you do so with the USB key plugged in, and repeat this process on the KNOPPIX-CONFIGURATION dialog box.
