Introduction Letter to BOE Letter to Parents Consent Form Follow-up Report

Introduction
Conducting Research in K-12 Schools

In additional to review by Southern's Institution Review Board, ILS 680 research that involves K-12 schools (students, parents, or staff) must also be reviewed and approved in writing by the Board or Education or the Superintendent of Schools or their equivalent in private institutions.

Prepare first a draft of the Southern IRB form (and submit to instructor for approval). From this prepare a proposal for the Board of Education and a coverletter (and submit to instructor for approval). From this prepare a script for an initial phone call (and submit to instructor for approval).

Identify schools for possible participation and make the first contact via a phone call to the Superintendent or the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction. You will follow-up a positive response with the [instructor/IRB-approved] coverletter and proposal.

Letter to Parents

Combining both the coverletter to the BOE and information in the proposal to the BOE, construct a letter to the parents describing the purpose and procedures for the proposed research. Ask the parents' permission for their child to take part in the research and give directions for returning the Consent Form (that will be included with the letter). You must give information on how to contact you. You may wish to use your Southern email address for the contact information and my office phone rather than your home phone number.

Parental Consent Form
and Student Assent Form

Follow Southern's IRB Proposal directions for constructing the Consent/Assent Form.

Post-Research Follow-up Report
to Schools and Parents

Your final research paper will include a summary report to the schools and parents of your general findings. This will be sent out after approval by the instructor.
