-
Butler, F. (1989). Sharing Literature with Children (reissue of 1977.). Prospect Heights, IL: Waveland Press. ISBN: 0-88133-463-4 [This is the one resource you will need for this course. It contains both a variety of children's literature you will need to read as well as essays about children's literature, which you will also need to read. If you want to get an early start on the course, just pick up a copy of the book and begin reading. If you read the essays before the course begins, you may want to take notes or highlight key points in the text.]
-
Case, D. O. (2002). Looking for Information: A Survey of Research on Information Seeking, Needs, and Behavior. New York: Academic Press. ISBN: 0-12-150381-x [This is the foundational resource you will need for this course. Additional readings will be suggested. It is also strongly recommended that you become familiar with both foundations of Empirical Research and Action Research]
-

Mentor who is currently in a management position, preferably in an organization/position to which the student aspires. (see Mentoring/Coaching Module) [I strongly recommend you establish a primary mentor well before the course begins. If you have questions/problems, please contact me.]
Another management book of your choice. The other sections of ILS 656 are using Stueart, R.D. & Moran, B.B. (2002). Library and Information Center Management (6th Edition). Libraries Unlimited. ISBN 1-56308-990-4 (paperback, about $50). [Check your local library for good selections that can be borrowed.]
A book on proposal writing of your choice. One suggestion: Miner & Miner (2003) Proposal Planning & Writing, Oryx Press. [1998 version is by Miner, Miner, & Griffith] [Check your local library for good selections that can be borrowed.]
A book on a special management issue/interest of your choice. Suggestions: Hills' 1992 Becoming a Manager; Mastery of a New Identity (Harvard Business School); Wolf & Carter's 1999 Managing a Nonprofit Organization (Simon & Schuster). Powell, Ronald R. Basic Research Methods of Librarians. 3rd ed. Greenwood Publishing Group, Incorporated, 1997. ISBN 1567503381 [This book closely follows the structure of the course and gives a good 'second voice/opinion' to the topics covered.]
Strongly Recommended:
Recommended/Suggested:
Miller, Barbara V. Excel Interactive Tutorials for Statistics [on CD-ROM]. John Wiley & Sons, 2001. ISBN 047140828-X [This is an interactive CD-ROM that presents fundamentals of using Microsoft Excel for data analysis, including descriptive statisitics, regression analysis, correlation, covariance, random number generation, sampling, as well as how to construct bar charts, data tables, line charts, pie charts, and scatter diagrams. If you fear math and are in terror of statistics, you might find this CD-ROM to be a friendly companion when conducting research. This CD-Rom should work equally well on a Mac or PC.]
Hernon, Peter. 1st ed. Statistics: A Component of the Research Process. Greenwood Publishing Group, Incorporated,1994. ISBN 1567500935 [I would strongly recommend that you at least check out from your local library a good statistics text written for the social sciences. While this is an older text, it still provides a good support for an LIS student's knowledge bank. ]
