Linking Course Objectives and Work to Core Competencies

This is intended to be an aid to students in constructing and maintaining the portfolio. Suggestions on how to improve clarity are welcome. As additional/updated course objectives become available, I will update these documents.

I have placed the MLS courses under the eight Competency Areas based on major content components. Some courses are listed under more than one area. For details (topics) under each competency area please see http://www.southernct.edu/ils/alacorecompetencies/

A large grain approach to the portfolio is to link whole courses to the eight competency areas. A smaller grain (and more meaningful) approach is to link components of a course to the specific topics under each competency area. For example, 1. Foundations of the Profession / 1I. How to communicate effectively in speech and writing you might place papers that were landmarks in your program in that they demonstrate major leaps in your effective academic writing, noting what about each paper makes it significant for each applicable competency topic.

Projects in one course may end up taking in specific topics of multiple competency areas. Where a course or course project contributed significantly to a specific topic within more than one competency area, please do note the portion of the project that contributed to each specific topic.

To go to submitted course objectives, click on the competency area under which a course is listed.
