Rotation Plan for the Master of Library Science (MLS) Program

The MLS degree program requires 36 credits, including 6 core courses (18 credits) and the rest 18 credits are for electives.

  • The 6 core required courses in the MLS degree program are:
    ILS 501 Introduction to Information Science and Technology
    ILS 503 Foundations of Librarianship
    ILS 504 Reference and Information Resources and Services
    ILS 506 Information Analysis and Organization
    ILS 565 Library Management
    ILS 580 Research in Information and Library Science
  • The 18 credits of electives (in most cases 6 courses) can be chosen from the following professional career tracks: public libraries, academic libraries, special libraries, and information systems and technology.

  • For a generalist in MLS program, the 6 elective courses can be chosen in any combination from ILS courses designed for all MLS professional tracks.

Rotation Plan for the Master of Library Science with School Media Specialist Certification (MLS/SMS) Program

The MLS with School Media Specialist Certificate (MLS/SMS) program requires 36 credits for the MLS, which includes 5 of the core courses for the MLS (ILS 501, 503, 504, 506, 580), 4 courses designed to meet the state regulations for school media specialist certification (ILS 511 and/or 512, 562, EDU 566), an array of courses that will meet the 6 credit technology requirement, and 3-6 credits of elective. An additional 0-18 credits in education-related courses (including Student Teaching) may be required to meet the State of Connecticut guidelines for initial teacher certification.
