Annotations

A collaborative approach will be used, in part, to help you gain basic knowledge and skills in management during this course. This portion of the course uses informative abstracts (annotations) contributed by classmates to help achieve this goal. Each annotations is accompanied by its bibliographic referernce in APA style and a keyword.

Annotations submitted by students are numbered and entered in the order received. It is estimated that approximately 40 webpages will be used by the end of the course to house all annotations. This page will be the only webpage that contains links to all available pages of annotations.

Reviewing Assignments involving Annotations

During each Section (I-VI) each student will be completing readings of his/her choice and sharing insights and new knowledge with classmates through annotations. Each annotation should begin with the bibliographic reference to the portion annotated (i.e. chapter, article, personal interview), written in APA style and include a keyword that best describes the knowledge gained. Annotations (less bibliographic entry) are expected to be concise entries of 50-150 words.

Students who aspire to a C in the course should submit 1 annotation each week, written at the Adequate or better level. Students who aspire to a B in the course should submit 2 annotations each week, written at the Strong or better level. Students who aspire to a A in the course should submit 3 annotations each week, written at the Outstanding level.

Email (within the message rather than as an attachment) your 1-3 annotations to the instructor at Brown@SouthernCT.edu by Friday of each week. [In the subject line please enter "565, your_nickname, annotations, week#."] Annotations will be loaded to this website. Be sure to use the SCORING OF ASSIGNMENTS as a guide for assessing the quality of drafts before submitting the final annotations for scoring and presentation to classmates.

Grading of Annotations

ANNOTATIONS

Each student will also be completing readings of his/her choice and sharing insights and new knowledge with classmates through annotations. Each annotation should begin with the bibliographic reference to the portion annotated (i.e. chapter, article, personal interview), written in APA style and include a keyword that best describes the knowledge gained. Annotations (less bibliographic entry) are expected to be concise entries of 50-150 words. [The annotations will comprise 10% of the final grade.]

How Annotations can be used

PERSONAL ENRICHMENT

Each student can use the 340-720 annotations that will be submitted over the semester to enrich his or her personal knowledge base in the general area of management with minimal time investiment. (If 720 annotations are submitted and 5 minutes are spent on each annotation; it will take 60 hours to read and briefly consider all annotations.)

CONTINUING LEARNING PLAN AND BIBLIOGRAPHY

Each student will develop, with his/her mentor, a continuing learning plan and compile a personal classified and annotated bibliography to support his/her plan, using, if appropriate, items submitted by classmates (as annotations or bibligraphy items with mini-cases). [The continuing learning plan and bibliography will comprise 10% of the final grade.]

MINI-CASES

Annotations may be used to inform responses to and critiques of case studies. When using information from annotations, be sure to cite in the following way: [ILS 565 Annotation ###, Spring, 2003]

EXAMPLE:
Lubens (2002) cites trust in managment as a factor in service [ILS 565 Annotation 039, Spring, 2003].
