Advisement
- Students are encouraged to meet with the Department Chairperson (in person or through a phone conference) prior to applying to the program for the purpose of discussing the program and how it fits into their career goals. Students are encouraged to meet with their general advisor soon after acceptance into a program.
- After acceptance into a graduate program, the student must file a Planned Program before the university will matriculate them into the school. [Students seeking financial aid may be required to be matriculated before loan checks are distributed.] To expedite moving students from acceptance to matriculation, the Department Chairperson will offer MLS students a pre-planned and approved temproary Undeclared Track Planned Program. This temporary program can be faxed or mailed to students accepted into the MLS program, signed, and returned by fax or mail. After completing the initial core courses (LSI 501, LSC 503, LSC 504, and LSC 506), students on the Undeclared Track will need to plan a program in one of the tracks acceptable for graduation (Academic, Public, School, Special, Information Science and Technololgy). Students in the Sixth Year, Instructional Technology, and certification-only programs should consult their general advisor prior to or in conjunction with consulting a chosen academic advisor and planning their program of study.
- Students who have not done so prior to matriculation, should make an appointment with their general advisor, introduce themselves, and discuss expectations and concerns.
- The general advisors will review the planned program with the student and academic advisor, suggest alternative courses, in general, advise the students.
- The general advisor, after consultation with the academic advisor, will report any changes from the original program to the office and sign the original program.
- Faculty office hours are scheduled at times generally convenient to students (at least five hours and over three days per week) and by appointment. In their offices, faculty have folders containing the planned programs of their advisees. Faculty may also request student transcripts which can be accessed by the Department's computer (interfaces with the University's computer).
- Students are expected to consult with their general and academic advisors on a regular basis and at least each semester prior to the registration period for review of their graduate study process, approval of course selection, and regarding academic/career interests or problems and internship opportunities.
- Students may call full-time faculty members directly. If the faculty member does not respond, a message may be left on his or her voicemail or please call a member of the office staff and leave a message. For messages for part-time faculty, call (203) 392-5764 or the Department Office (203) 392-5781.
- Mailboxes for all faculty are located in the Department Office, BU 416. When the office is closed, mail for faculty may be left in the office mail basket located in the Technical Center, BU 417.
- Students may change advisors if they wish. This change is made through the Chairperson.
