Acadia My educational background is in elementary education, and upon graduation with an undergraduate degree I taught first and second grades for several years. With this as an educational background as a foundation, I am planning to pursue certification as a school media specialist. During the years that I was a teacher for first and second graders, I was responsible for the planning, implementing, and evaluating of activities that matched the curriculum as well as the interest of my students.
Action I am the Library Director of a Public Library in a town of 10,000 and has a staff of fifteen (8.9 FTE) and a circulation of 170,000+. We are open seven days during the winter and six days during the summer. We are twenty months into a $4 million addition/renovation. My hobbies are reading, Egyptology, and museums.
AJ I grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan (Canada), but am now living in Ottawa, Ontario. I got my BA at the University of Regina, with a major in French. To complete this degree, I spent a year teaching English in St. Etienne, France. I have held several positions and worked on several projects since I started at the National Library in 1998. I started at the National Library of Canada (http://www.nlc-bnc.ca) with a group called User Support within Information Technology Services. As part of this group, I worked on several projects including AMICUS Web and AMICUS via Z39.50. Both projects involved the creation of webpages, communication with the users and training.
Cookie I live in Nicaragua, but I was born in Honduras, Central America. I lived in Miami, Florida for about 12 years where I met my husband who decided to come back home after the revolution, so here I am. I work at the American Nicaraguan School in Managua. Itıs a Pre K-12th grade school with about 1300 students. My responsibilities are to teach them research skills, assist teachers and purchase material to support the curriculum. Three years ago when I began working in the library I automated with Follett, created a Collection Development policy and a web page for the library. I believe I have created a welcoming environment and I will always try to encourage the love of reading in everyone.
Dobe I was born in the rolling hills of Northeastern Pennsylvania and continue to reside there today. My heritage is a mixture of cultures brought to this country in the early part of the last century. I was married less then one year ago and was privileged to spend my honeymoon in Bermuda during a record breaking weak of rain. After high school I attended a state university where I earned two teaching Degrees and a B.A.in History. My goal was to become either an elementary or secondary social studies teacher. In the meantime, to supplement my income, I took a job at a very small and very rural library. In that position I first learned to love most aspects of librarianship. I found that helping to organize and maintain a library collection was enjoyable work. Connecting library users with the material that they sought was quite rewarding. Almost every time that I left that little library I felt as though I had accomplished something and I liked the feeling. I am currently Director of Library Services.
East Coast I received my bachelor's degree in Business Administration and started the first year of my career working in retail management. After a year of 55 to 70 hour work weeks, I made the decision to move on. Within two weeks of leaving retail, I applied for and accepted a position as a public services librarian. I discovered how much I love working as a librarian and decided to make this my career home. I also volunteer as the librarian for my church's library, where I help people find materials, process donated materials, maintain a sign-out sheet, and oversee any library volunteer projects. Last year I led the county LEAP (Leading from any Position) team, a task force created to raise young adult interest and circulation. By implementing a ³YA Change Model," where part of the model included purchasing new YA materials and creating a "teen zone" at each branch, the team succeeded in reaching its intended audience.
Hiker Mom In my first career, I worked at an insurance company in various accounting positions for twenty years. The pay was good but I always dreamed of working at a public library (I worked at a library while in high school). In my second career, I am working at my dream job at the Free Public Library as a paraprofessional. Iıve been there for almost four years. The library is a rather small one with only one full time employee and four part-time. Being such a small library, my responsibilities include a little of everything.
Marv I've worked at a radio station, local newspapers, a tourism office and did some freelance work for a magazine but when I finally finished my BA Degree in English. In addition to working with children, I did a variety of circulation and reference jobs and eventually was doing the scheduling and all of the computer type work that the manager didn't want to deal with. When the manager retired in 1995, I was hired to manage the branch and since that time our staff has grown from two to seven.
Matilda I work full time at a Library where I am the Branch Assistant. My job has become an invaluable asset to my Library Science Program, because I have been able to apply everything I've learned to real situations. I handle the library's publicity, work the reference, circulation, and children's desks, attend roundtables, assist with interlibrary loan, maintain the computers/technology at the Branch location, provide outreach services to the elderly, and assist with reader's advisory. Career wise, my greatest accomplishment has been my involvement with the Books To Dreams program, which provides new and used children's books to homeless shelters and soup kitchens throughout the state.
May88 I am a former Grade 5 and library media teacher who's made a career transition to an academic library. I've found that much of my knowledge and skills are transferable, but that there's still a lot of reference experience to gain. After teaching for 5 years, I'm working as a Reference Technician in a small college library. When I graduate this semester with my MLS I hope to advance to a Reference Librarian position, but for now I'm happy to do the same job and be called a Ref Tech. I really like working in small libraries because of the opportunities to learn a wider range of skills.
Ora I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education with a minor in art. On my first day, at my first teaching job I met my husband to be. We were married four months later. My three years as librarian of a small school library entailed constant new learning and major accomplishments. I currently work in technical services at the University. My position is advanced cataloging and serials management specialist.
Penny I am the Director of a County Public Library. I have found this to be the only job I have ever had that I really love. I started out as a circulation person and worked my way up to Director. My biggest accomplishments have been working my way up to a management position. I did not graduate from high school but went back and received my GED after my daughter was born. While working at the library I attended College where I received a BA in Office Administration.
Rainey I live in Oregon. I moved here to major in Recreation and Park Management at the University of Oregon, after spending most of my childhood overseas. Before my children were born, I worked for a municipal parks and recreation agency as a recreation and volunteer coordinator at a large senior center. When my children started school, a friend suggested I apply for part-time work at the local public library, and I eagerly pursued it as library work had always interested me. That was ten years ago, and since then Iıve worked in both public and school libraries. Five months ago I became one of tow driver/²coordinators² of a brand new bookmobile, so I feel my best work is yet to come, but I am happy about a few things Iıve done so far: learning to operate the vehicle confidently under a wide range of conditions; creating a database for managing all relevant information about the bookmobileıs 30 + stops; adjusting to the unexpected departure of my first ³partner² and the hiring of a new one with a very different personal style; and establishing good relationships with our customers and my co-workers.
Sapphire t is easier to begin a personal introduction in person. If you were in my library, I could show a name tag, pictures of school children and cats on my desk, and mounds of paperwork that represent Octoberıs statistical reports. I live in Delaware, and have worked in public libraries for the past 20 years. Job duties in smaller library systems tend to overlap. I am currently assistant director and reference librarian at the [beachward] library. I also do outreach programs for the upper levels of the local elementary school and fill in at the libraryıs children programs when necessary. My father used to call me Sapphire as a child. I thought he was talking about a pretty, sparkly stone. Years later, I found out that he was referring to a character in a Western. I can still hear him saying, ³come along, Sapphire.²
Sister Greetings to everyone! I'm attending class from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Professional - Librarianship is my second career. I hold a BFA in Theatre, an MA in Theatre, and an MFA in Theatre with emphasis in costume history, costume design, and costume shop management. My areas of interest are: men's fashion; the Victorian, Edwardian, 1930's, and 1940's fashion; fabric painting and dyeing; and how the industrial revolution impacted the cut of clothing. I have been working in the information and library field since 1992. Currently I am Head of Outreach and Education at a Health Science Information Center.
Storygirl I currently work in the Church History Library. I received my B. A. in English Literature. After graduation I began working as a reference assistant in the Church History Library. In this position, I was responsible for circulation, compiling staff stats, answering incoming reference questions, and other general library maintenance. During this time, I worked on developing a new circulation system as part of an automation committee, revised the circulation policies and procedures to limit abuse of library privileges, and assisted in research for a pioneer database. At the end of two years I was promoted to a professional reference position as I started working on my MLS.
Wedding Planner Hello from Colorado. I have lived in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains all my life. I have worked for the same library district for 20 years this month, starting as a clerk. For the past several years I have been in youth services at the main library. I am now an associate librarian. I have done internships at Outreach Services and Reference, both of which I enjoyed very much. My lifelong dream will soon be realized. My first novel will be published this year. I have read the page proofs and done the final editing. It is now in cover design. I have also written and/or co-authored five non-fiction books.
Zarzuela I have a Bachelor of Music degree and I also hold a Master of Music degree. As a musician, two accomplishments stand out in my mind. The first was being accepted to the Masterıs program at Yale. In an average year, only three bassoon students are accepted to the program, so I see this as a great accomplishment to be accepted. I also wanted very badly to study with the teacher that is at Yale, so this made my acceptance all the more important to me. My second accomplishment was winning a position in the Air Force band at Langley Air Force base during my first year of my masterıs degree. These positions are fairly competitive and are won through a rigorous audition process. I ultimately turned the position down to finish my masterıs degree at Yale, but I am still proud of the accomplishment. A Zarzuela is a Spanish operetta form.
