Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Edson, J.T. Quest for Bowie's Blade NY: Berkley Books, 1974 1974
Doyle, A.C.; Stevenson, Robert Louis Sherlock Holmes; Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde Estleman, Loren Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Holmes Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc.: 1979 1979 Crossover Personalization Holmes pastiche from SH v. Dracula author. Begins with how the mss arrived in his hands and its place in canonical context, and a preface from Watson. SH engaged by Utterson, then by the Crown, to investigate the Jekyll/Hyde affair. Meta: Postscript has RLS showing up at 221B for details in order to write his story.
Doyle, A.C.; Stoker, Bram Sherlock Holmes Estleman, Loren Sherlock Holmes v. Dracula Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1978 1978 Crossover Recontextualization Emotional intensification Pastiche opening. Parallel stories with intersections, SH & W meet Van Helsing & co, plus Harker, and Mina on her own. Nice H/W h/c at times--H very concerned for W.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Eustace, Grant Absolute Discretion Ashcroft BC: Calabash, 1997 1997
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Farmer, Philip Jose Adventure of the Peerless Peer NY: Dell Books, 1976 1974 Crossover Sequel Pastiche opening, ref to Duke of Denver. Lord Greystoke, more or less, Doc Savage, Lamont Cranston, other pulp characters. Holmes on the trail of Von Bork (Final Bow), ends up in Africa. Meant to be funny.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Fawcett, Quinn Against the Brotherhood NY: Forge, 1997 1997
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Fawcett, Quinn Embassy Row NY: Forge, 1998 1998 Refocalization "Authorized by Dame Jean Doyle" on the cover. Exceedingly dull. Endless byplay between MH and the OC domestic staff: Guthrie the secretary, Tyers the valet, Sutton the double, Hastings. The plot involves the Japanese. That's all I gleaned before giving up from boredom. Very fan fic with all the talking and not acting. Recurring pastiche theme--countries trying to jump-start WW1.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Fawcett, Quinn Flying Scotsman New York: Tom Doherty Associates, 1999 1999 Refocalization "Authorized by Dame Jean Doyle". Third in the series of MH, his assistant Guthrie, cook/asst. Tyers (narrative by Guthrie with inserts from Tyers's journal), etc.. Also Penelope Gatsby, agent of the Golden Lodge (sometime MH allies against the Brotherhood). This story has MH and Guthrie escorting Prince Oscar of Sweden, incognito, out of the country aboard Flying Scotsman train to thwart assassination attempts.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Fawcett, Quinn Scottish Ploy NY: Forge, 1999 1999
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Feuer, Lewis Case of the Revolutionist's Daughter Buffalo: Prometheus, 1983 1983 Expansion Sherlock Holmes meets Karl Marx" and other RPs: GBS, Beatrice Potter Webb, William Morris, Engels. Pastiche opening refers to fan group BSI. Engel hires SH to find KM's missing daughter Eleanor. Not much of a mystery as everyone knows where she is, so other stuff with Moriarty and Adler happens. Padget illos throughout.
Doyle, A.C.; Dickens, Charles Sherlock Holmes; Edwin Drood Fleissner, Robert Master Sleuth on the Trail of Edwin Drood: Sherlock Holmes & the Jasper Syndrome: An Annotated Pastiche US: Xlibris, 2002 2002 Crossover Personalization Prequel More Dickens than Holmes, although Holmes is sort of the main character, along with Harris. Apparently Harris performs a Watsonian role to Datchery in ED and does so here to 19 y.o. Holmes. Both are searching for the real-life inspiration for John Jasper. A lot of tedious linguistic discussions of names in Dickens with Clinch (sometimes Clinchy) Magink (really) as the r.l. Jasper trying to commit preposterously whimsical murders in implausibly public situations. Giant Rat, Nessie. Meta: people in Dickens costumes, a Dickens conference.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Flinn, Denny Martin Killer Finish NY: Bantam Books, 1991 1991 Refocalization Spencer Holmes, grandson of Sherlock and Irene Adler, investigates the death of a magician in contemporary San Francisoc. Watson-substitute is East Indian named Sowhat Dihje. Annoying and repeated direct address to reader.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Flinn, Denny Martin San Francisco Kills NY: Bantam Books, 1991 1991
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Freemantle, Brian Holmes Factor Sutton NY: Severn House, 2005 2005
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Freemantle, Brian Holmes Inheritance NY: Severn House, 2004 2004 Refocalization Sebastian, son of Sherlock and Mathilde Huber, a Swiss nurse he met in Meiringen. Author apparently not a fan (nonpastiche intro implies little knowledge of canon outside reference books). Style, irritating, because of, excessive, commas. Couldn't finish. Events leading up to WW 1. RP Winston Chuchill, probably others. Sherlock and Mycroft figure prominently.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Friesner, Esther Druid's Blood NY: Signet Books, 1988 1988 Dislocation Genre shift Dr. John Weston and his literary creation turned into real boy, Brihtric Donne, are charged with retrieving the Rules of Britannia and saving Victoria and England from the evil Lord Kitchener and Lady Byron. It's a Magic Kingdom, with the Duke of Wellington the Archdruid. Several RPs show up with real or fake names: Byron, Ada Lovelace, Doyle, H.G. Wells, etc.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Fullenkamp, Luke Steven Adventure of the Three Dragons Bloomington: 1stBooks Library, 2000 2000
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Gardner, John Moriarty London: Pan Books, 1976 1974 Refocalization Recontextualization While there's overlap/alternate pov for "The Empty House" and "The Final Problem", the main plot concerns M's attempts to re-establish and maintain his crime empire after returning to London 3 years after Reichenbach. He's a bad, bad man. Fratricide, Moranicide, and more. Pastiche foreword. Revenge of Moriarty is companion piece/continuation.

Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hall, John Sherlock Holmes & the Adler Papers London: Breese Books, 2001 2001 Expansion Fan press. One of several by this author, utter fan fic. Holmes called in to help King of Bohemia again. Intro disses Watson, so this author is dead to me. Jacket claims "best-seller" and "award winning."
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hall, John Sherlock Holmes & the Boulevard Assassin London: Breese Books, 1998 1998

Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hall, Robert Lee King Edward Plot NY: McGraw-Hill, 1980 1980 Refocalization Pastiche opening. Frederick Wigmore (Wiggins as was, now an actor among other things), Herbert Munn (Watson equivalent), Munn's uncle Simon Bliss (Mycroft equivalent) who is a member of the Diogenes Club, and Alfred Merridew (new Wiggins) investigate. Wiggins lives in SH & W's old flat, Munn moves into Mrs. H's spot as she retires to the Downs.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hanna, Edward B. Whitechapel Horrors NY: Carroll & Graf, 1992 1992 Expansion JtR Pastiche opening. SH investigate JtR [spoiler] and does not solve the case. Cool! Nice misdirection with Lord Randolph Churchill and Prince Albert Edward.[spoiler] RPs include Abberline, Lord Randolph Churchill, and the Prince of Wales. Footnotes, a bibliography, and summary of main JtK theories. SH is kind of a dick to W at times but worse than that--some jackass marked up this library book.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hapi Adamantine Sherlock Holmes Brookline MA: Kanthaka, 1974 1974
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hardwick, Michael Prisoner of the Devil London: Proteus, 1979 1979
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hardwick, Michael Private Life of Dr. Watson NY: Dutton, 1983 1983 Expansion Prequel Permission of Dame Jean. John Hudson Watson's life as schoolboy, traveler, and army doctor, ending 2 weeks before he met SH. Told in retrospect. Dull. RPs: Gilbert, Beecher, Bernhardt. Hudson was mother's maiden name. SH=father figure.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hardwick, Michael Revenge of the Hound NY: Villard, 1987 1987 Expansion 1902, coronation, hound on Hampstead Heath, missing bones from old Tyburn (possibly Cromwell), SH refuses knighthood, etc, etc. and so forth. A slog.

Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Harmidarow, Walter J. Final Solution Shelburne ON: Battered Silicon Dispatch Box, 1998 1998
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Harrison, Michael I, Sherlock Holmes NY: E.P. Dutton, 1977 1977 Expansion Recontextualization SH autobiography, edited and annotated by Harrison. Lengthy pastiche opening with description of mss, etc. Footnotes throughout. I've thought of Holmes as many things: arrogant, brilliant, moody, insufferable, drama queen, repressed gay. But never as a crashing bore. Thanks so much, Harrison. Usual mix of RPs and FPs, explanations of Watson's thought processes as he came up with fake names for "real" cases, some adventures told (some untold tales of canon, others not). At least SH is fond of W, or so he says.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Haughey, Thomas Brace Case of the Frozen Scream Minneapolis: Bethany Fellowship, 1979 1979
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Haughey, Thomas Brace Case of the Invisible Thief Minneapolis: Bethany Fellowship, 1978 1978 Refocalization Geoffrey Weston, grandson of Mycroft, is a "Christian detective." Home/office on Baker St. Prayer and bible study precede investigation. John Taylor=Watson, Twigg=Lestrade. Written and set in 1970s but feels musty--Scotland Yard consulting GW when Reginald Hill and the others were writing police procedurals with an eye to realism. Maybe if GW was a PI it wouldn't feel so antiquated. Supernatural v. science, the bad guys tampered in God's domain, and so on. Sort of AU because it reconstructs the original set-up in a different time, but only direct ties to SH are Baker St. and Mycroft.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Haughey, Thomas Brace Case of the Maltese Treasure Minneapolis: Bethany Fellowship, 1979 1979
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Haughey, Thomas Brace Case of the Kidnapped Shadow Minneapolis: Bethany Fellowship, 1980 1980

Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hilton, John Buxton Slickensides NY: St. Martin's, 1987 1987
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hockensmith, Steve Holmes on the Range NY: St. Martin's Minotaur, 2006 2006 Personlization Really enjoyed it and would never have read these characters without the SH connection. Old Red and brother Big Red are cowboys in 1893 Montana working at the Bar VR ranch. OR is a big Holmes fan and decides to emulate him when a death occurs. SH & W real (but never on stage here), and extra points for using characters from the Noble Bachelor, the St. Simon family. OR&BR are OCs Hockensmith has written several short stories about. 2nd degree fan fic--fan fic about fans, fans who play SH.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hodel, Michael P. & Sean M. Wright Enter the Lion New York: Hawthorn Books, Inc.: 1979 1980 Refocalization "Edited" by Hodel & Wright who found MSS in a desk in an antique store. "Published with the permission of the copyright owner of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle literary estate." Mycroft narrates the story of a plot to overthrow the U.S. and U.K. governments in 1875-6. Conspirators include a group of ex-Confederate officers, a femme fatale, and Jerrold Moriarty, father of the James Moriartys, one of whom becomes the evil Professor Moriarty. [spoiler] Jerrold is dishonored and kills himself, setting up the feud.[spoiler] Special guest stars include Disraeli and Gladstone, U.S. Ambassador Schenck. Mycroft is 28, Sherlock 21. No Watson. Sidekick role filled by Victor Trevor from "The Gloria Scott."
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Holland, Tom Supping with Panthers London: Little, Brown, 1996 1996
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Holt, Tom My Hero London: Orbit, 1996 1996
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hosier , Sydney Elementary, Mrs. Hudson NY: Avon, 1996 1996
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hosier, Sydney Game's Afoot, Mrs. Hudson NY: Avon, 1998 1998
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hosier, Sydney Most Baffling, Mrs. Hudson New York: Avon Books, 1998 1998 Refocalization Emma Hudson and Violet Warner solve the case of a man murdered in front of dinner guests who saw nothing. The solution-- [spoiler] they were hypnotized [spoiler]--is obvious and the writing marred by excessive dialect from Mrs. Warner (hates that, I does). Filled with anachronisms and not at all clear why the author chose to use the Holmes setting and then ignore it except in name. Third in the series? H&W referred to but do not appear.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Hosier, Sydney Murder, Mrs. Hudson NY: Avon, 1997 1997
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Ions, Edmund Sherlock Holmes in Dallas NY: Dodd, Mead, 1980 1980
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Jack, Alex Inspector Gingko Tips His Hat to Sherlock HolmesBecket MA: One Peaceful World, 1994 1994
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Jackson, Marian Punjat's Ruby NY: Windsor Pub, 1990 1990
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Janda, Anita Secret Diary of Dr. Watson London: Allison & Busby, 2001 2001 Recontextualization Really interesting, with a great Watson. The stories behind the stories, the difficulties of publishing, the difficulties of associating with Holmes. Fan fic to the core--tries to account for chronology of adventures and publication dates, and gives psychological depth where there was none. The more you know the canon, the better it is. [spoiler] Lost me at the Resurrection with Watson's decision to return to Baker Street, because I didn't buy the rationalization,[spoiler] but really good read overall.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Jeffers, H. Paul Adventure of the Stalwart Companions NY: Harper & Row, 1978 1978 Expansion Prequel Characters used with permission of CR owners. Pastiche opening, long set of notes by chapter at end. Story is SH & Teddy Roosevelt in NYC, 1880. Man killed in front of failed presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden, thwarted assassination of Rutherford B. Hayes. Mystery isn't very mysterious because there are no suspects, clues, etc. for reader to follow. Holmes in NYC as actor William Escott.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Jeffers, H. Paul Murder Most Irregular NY: St. Martin's Press, 1983 1983
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Jones, Jill Bloodline NY: St. Martin's Paperbacks, 2000 2000
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Kaye, Marvin Incredible Umbrella Garden City NY: Doubleday, 1979 1979
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Kendrick, Stephen Night Watch NY: Berkley Prime Crime, 2001 2001
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes King, Laurie R. Beekeeper's Apprentice New York: Bantam Books, 1996 1994 Refocalization Personalization The first in King's series about Mary (or, as I think of her, Mary Sue) Russell. First part of the book deals with her apprenticeship, then a set of cases involving a mysterious nemesis. Pastiche intro made me hate Russell with her annoying disses of Watson, and unsupported claims of awesomeness. Series lacks a humanizing Watsonian biographer to make the characters tolerable. And yet I keep reading them.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes King, Laurie R. Monstrous Regiment of Women New York: Bantam, 1997 1995 Refocalization Personalization It's the 39 year age gap that wigs me, and the Mary Sue-ness. She'd actually be better without Holmes, like an unfunny but still interesting Phryne Fisher. The most interesting aspect of the books to me is the time period and the roles of women. In this book, a charismatic woman named Margery Childe has started The New Temple in God. She attracts a large group of wealthy young women who had done things in the war and then had nowhere to focus their capable, energetic selves. Meta: reference to ACD fairy controversy. Crossover/meta: possibly a passing reference to Raffles.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes King, Laurie R. Letter of Mary New York: Bantam, 1998 1997 Refocalization Personalization Guest victim is Dorothy Ruskin, archaeologist, first encountered briefly in Beekeeper's Apprentice (as are a couple of characters in a later book. Yay continuity!). Based on Gertrude Bell (who is also mentioned), she's a wonderful character who reminds me of Evelyn Smithson. She delivers a box with a MSS that seems to be a letter from Mary Magdalene to her sister, calling herself an apostle of Jesus. DR is murdered shortly thereafter. Lord Peter Wimsey has an extended cameo.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes King, Laurie R. Moor New York: Bantam, 1999 1998 Refocalization Personalization Hound of the Baskervilles revisited, but in a really dull way. RP Sabine Baring-Gould, perhaps the model for Dr. Mortimer, calls SH and MR to investigate the death of man on the moor and recent sightings of Lady Howard's ghost coach and big ghost dog. Tedious. Dialect. Aieee!
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes King, Laurie R. O, Jerusalem New York: Bantam, 2000 1999 Refocalization Personalization Read it once, can't get through it again. Set during the Palestine interlude of BA, with Ali and Mahmoud who appear first on the list in BA, then here, and later in the UK (Justice Hall).
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes King, Laurie R. Game NY: Bantam, 2004 2004
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes King, Laurie R. Justice Hall NY: Bantam, 2002 2002
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes King, Laurie R. Locked Rooms New York: Bantam Books, 2005 2005 Refocalization Personalization Most recent of the Mary Russell books. This one is about Russell's past so possibly even more Mary Sue-ish than usual given that King and Russell are both San Franciscans, and King's mother was apparently named Mary. But well-written and engaging other than the Holmes stuff. Dashiell Hammett also appears.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes King, Laurie R. Art of Detection New York: Bantam, 2006 2006 Refocalization Crossover Personalization Part of King's Martinelli series, but revolves around a Sherlockian society and a newly discovered MSS of a SH story. MSS=SH narrative of interlude in Locked Rooms re: Billie Birdsong, drag queen chanteuse. In this world, everyone thinks ACD might've written it while in SF on spiritualism tour because SH isn't real...except in the Russell series, he is.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Kurland, Michael Death by Gaslight NY: New American Library, 1982 1982
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Kurland, Michael Empress of India NY: St. Martin's Minotaur, 2006 2006 Moral realignment Moriarty novel, reference to Duchess of Denver. SH hired to prevent gold heist but disappears. Moriarty and Moran go to India on a separate matter and return on Empress of India, which carries the gold. Meanwhile gang assembled by Pin Duk Low [spoiler] painfully obvious SH [spoiler] plots to steal gold. "Ah" and "That's so" get annoying very quickly.
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Kurland, Michael Great Game NY: St. Martin's Minotaur, 2001 2001
Doyle, A.C. Sherlock Holmes Kurland, Michael Infernal Device NY: New American Library, 1978 1978
