STATEMENT OF NON-PARTICIPATION IN GENERAL CURRICULUM

Ivy requires both a primary special education instructor and a minimum of one special education aide (preferably 2) to instruct her in the manipulation of the hackey sack, as to provide her with enough actual physical contact with the sack, something not guaranteed within general curriculum.

TRANSITION PLANNING

Ivy has been provided with Website address of local hackey sack clubs that are non-competitive, and that accept participants of all levels and abilities, and which will help her continue practicing her hackey sack skills beyond formal schooling.

PARTICIPATION IN STATEWIDE OR DISTRICT ASSESSMENTS

Ivy will not participate in standardized assessments as they presume superior eye-foot coordination.

Journal Entry #1

September 17, 1999

Content:

Familiarizing self with feel of sack, its weight and give.

Advised on appropriate foot gear

Sack hand-served toward feet, attempted contact. Significant improvement over 15 minutes

Sack foot-served toward feet, attempted contact. No improvement.

Attempt picking up sack with shod feet, unshod feet. No success.

Helpful:

Apinya mixed up different skill-developing lessons, so I wouldn't get frustrated that I was so terrible.

She could pinpoint where I was going wrong in returning (passing) the sack and told me how to make adjustment.

Gave me lots of reality doses -- that it's a difficult skill, that few people can do it, that in a real game I wouldn't be in constant motion.

Gave me lots of praise -- particularly when I got to where I was quickly improving at returning hand tossed sack.

Apinya laughed a lot, and talked about things other than the game.

Less Helpful:

She forgot that as a beginner I didn't know that I really should not have been wearing baggy jeans -- I should have had on shorts.

Emotions:

Very happy experience. Beautiful scenery, lots laughing, knowing that it matters not if I suck.

So excited when I actually passed the sack -- we both gave me cheers heard clear across park.

Journal Entry #4

October 5, 1999

Content: Passing to others/self

Today's lesson had two components -- me attempting continuous return passes of the sack, and me passing the sack amongst my own lower body parts.

For the first part, either Apinya or I would serve the sack, the other would return pass it, the server would pass it again, and the other would pass it again. The idea was for me to get the hang of being in constant "ready" mode and to build confidence in being able to return an unpredictable pass. I was fairly decent at this, double passing almost 1/2 the time. I triple passed once. Apinya also would pass the sack both pretty far from my original position or sometimes at an acute angle to get me used to using other leg muscles and being in other attack situations.

For the second part of the lesson Apinya wanted me to develop an ability to pass to myself (pass the sack from one foot to another, one foot to one knee, etc.). This skill is good for both showing off and for getting the sack into a decent returnable position when it has been passed to me at an awkward angle or height. I am right now extremely bad at this, and have been given it as my homework for the rest of the week.

Helpful:

I liked how Apinya made the lesson both short and intense. This combination really helped me to concentrate on my eye-foot coordination, because I absolutely had to pay attention to the smaller details if I were to have a fruitful lesson. It also helped aleviate the frustrations I had in the last lesson, where I was doing one thing for a half hour. I also liked how Apinya thinks I can do more, and even though I am not great at regular passing, she is now letting me attack more complicated passes, like those of high speed or from difficult angles.

Slowed:

Annoyance at teacher. Apinya likes to show off just a touch, especially now that I can pass to her not too pathetically. I know it's supposed to elicit a, "oooh, that is so cool...when will I be able to dance the sack like that" response, but its actual effect was to make me go, "I'll never be that good," then I'd list the reasons.

Feelings:

A bit stressed, feeling as if something is soon to be on the line. Fearing that this game might actually MATTER in some twisted part of my brain. Sometimes, when that sack comes at me, I feel as if I am a target at a shooting range, or in a snowball fight. Adrenaline rush.

A bit thrilled that I can finally do something resembling Hackey Sack.
