-to learn combinations. i.e. front kick, left jab, right jab, lower cut, and then upper cut.
-to learn how to keep her balance while kicking and while doing full turn kicks or punches.
-to get heart rate up.
3. Special Accommodations :

-Boxing gloves
-Wrist wraps
-punching bag
-fast beat music

4. Extent in regular Education :

The Teacher, Tom, works one on one when needed. He helps to give a clear demonstration when help is need with punches and kicks. The teaching environment is based in the "Dojo" studio.
The student will not participate in a State or district wide assessment of student achievement. The testing is non-applicable.

5. Dates :

Advanced Organizer

Topic :

We will practice how to concentrate on your body and your balance. This balance will help you to have control when doing consecutive kicks followed by jabs and crosses. The exercise will be done off and on the punching bag.

Framework for the lesson :

1. Practice 20 right jabs and crosses without the punching bag. Then change to using the left side.

2. Practice 20 right front, side, and heel kicks without the punching bag. Then change to using the left side.

3. Combinations: 2 right jabs, 1 left cross, 1 left side heel kick, 1 left front kick. Then alternate starting with the left side...2 left jabs, 1 right cross, 1 right side heel kick, 1 left front kick. Do 15 sets without the punching bag.

4. Repeat steps 1-3, but now with your boxing gloves, wraps, and the punching bag.

Needed for assignment :

-wraps
-punching bag
-boxing gloves

To help you learn :
Remember to take your time with your movements, and really concentrate on what you are doing. Breathe every time you move and "kiai." Also if you are unsure of a move don't be afraid to ask for a demonstration.

Dates to Remember :
There will be no test dates, but I am always watching for improvements with punching, balancing during movements, and kicking at every class.
Teaching Methods

Ideas for Presenting Information:

-Demonstrate the task asked to the student.
-Have the student demonstrate the task back to the teacher.
-Explain what was done correctly and what needs improvements.
-Always point out strong abilities of the child. Give positive feedback.

Ideas for Demonstrating Learning for Content Areas:

-Allow time for improvements.
-Allow student to demonstrate abilities of interests, at the end of class, to the teacher. i.e. allow student to do whatever they want on the punching bag for 10-15sec.

Journal Entry #1
9/16/97

Content :

-We are located in the "Dojo" studio.
-There is a friendly environment of 6 adults from the ages of 18-40ish.
-We want to: increase heart rate during a peak workout to 19-23 beats on a 10 second count, learn jabs, cuts/crosses, instep kicks, heel kicks, and combinations.

Helpful :

-The up beat "techno" music.
-Also demonstrations the teacher did for me in a slow/clear style. ( i.e. the upper cut: "Punch with your elbow up and bring your punch around almost like your tying to hit your object with your elbow.")

Bothered/Slowed :

-I was slowed when I was unsure of the kick/punch in which was asked of me.
-Combinations was also hard for me to do.

Feelings :

-When working one on one with the teacher, with fast moving kicks or combinations, it helped me to understand what I was doing correct or incorrect.

Heart rate: 21

My first class wasn't too bad. The steps were basic, if took piece by piece and demonstrated by the teacher, Tom. I had a hard time with fast moving kicks, combination jabs/crosses/ cuts, and keeping my balance at the same time. My heart rate was 21 beats at the 10 second count.

Entry # 4
9-26-97
Content :

-We need to increase our heart rate.
-We need to practice "Around the World" kicks. (i.e. Front, side, heel kick one after another.)
-We need to do "Around the World" punches.(i.e. jab/cross front, jab/cross side.)
-We need to work on jumping front kicks, on and off the punching bag.

Helpful :

-Our new fast beat music.
-Learning new moves.(i.e. jumping front kicks and "Around the Worlds."
-When I first tried the jumping front kicks, Tom seemed very impressed with my ability to perform the movement by saying "Nice jump!"(positive reinforcement)

Bothered/slowed :

-There was a lot of people in the class, more than usual. This stopped me from having more one on one demonstrations from Tom.
-I was sometimes unsure of the movements for punches during the Cardio part of the class, so it took me longer to get into the activity of the class.

Feelings :

-Today's class made me think of how hard it is for a teacher to make sure all the students are doing what they are supposed to be doing with a large class. If a teacher doesn't pay attention then some child/children might get caught in the crowd, and not do the task correctly. Especially with a large group.
-I noticed, when a teacher changes the routine or teaches a new skill, my energy increases.
-As a teacher, I must remember to keep the learning interesting and not repetitive. Also, when working with a larger group to always be aware of all the students and their understanding of the learning.

Journal Entry #8
11-14-97

Content :

-Increase in heart rate.
-Learn new moves of: hook punch and jumping side defensive kick.
-Practice combinations for punching on the punching bag. Jab, jab, cross, under cut, upper cut, and hook punch.
-Practice combinations for kicking on the punching bag. Jumping front kick, side kick, jumping side defensive kick.

Helpful :

-We once again had a small class of four people, so when we learned hook punches and jumping side defensive kicks, we could get more of a one on one instruction.
-When Tom clearly explained the jumping side defensive kick. He told us where our hips, feet, and direction of our body should be.
-When I tried the kick, after practicing slowly, he said "That's it Cate, you got it!" (positive reinforcement)
-Tom has had us practice the defensive side kick and jumping front kicks before, and the understanding from those moves made the jumping defensive side kick easier to pick up.

Bothered/slowed :

-What slowed me today was trying to really concentrate hard on my movements.

Feelings :

-Tom has a plan and a time for what he wants us to learn. As a teacher this is necessary so you can allow your student to take past learning and apply it to new tasks asked in the future.
-Working one on one and explaining in a clear style with a demonstration, has really helped me throughout this whole experience. Not only is it beneficial to me, but I'm sure also to the teacher because they can see my improvements and what teaching style I learn from best.
-Teaching and learning is like a puzzle. You need to take the piece of information and figure out how to make it understandable for everyone.
