Learning Kun Tao

An IEP for Darrylle Sullivan

I. Present Level of Performance -

Darrylle is able to perform the basic stretching exercises prior to starting Kun Tao, but lacks the basic skills and knowledge necessary for punches, kicks and throws. As this is her only area of disability, she will be able to progress in the normal class with the exception of Kun Tao.

II. Goal #1 -

Darrylle will improve her ability to execute punches

Short term objectives:

1. Given a series of 5 punches by the instructor, Darrylle

will correctly identify the types of punches 4 of 5 times.

2. Given a series of 5 punches, Darrylle will be able to get into the proper stance 4 of 5 times.

3. Given a simple sequence of 5 punches, Darrylle will properly execute 4 of the 5 within 15 seconds.

Goal #2 -

Darrylle will improve her ability to execute kicks

Short term objectives:

1. Following warm up exercises, Darrylle will be able to do a sequence of 10 kicking exercises (5 times each leg) within 20 seconds.

2. Given a target, Darrylle will kick the target accurately 8 of 10 times (5 times per side).

3. Darrylle will improve her ability to shift into a series of

4 kicking stances 8 of 10 times.

Goal #3 -

Darrylle will be able to successfully execute a throw

Short term objectives:

1. Darrylle will be able to perform necessary steps leading

to a throw.

2. Darrylle will be able to execute a throw using a dummy

(weighted).

III. Special Education and Related Services -

Darrylle will participate in all regular classroom activities, except

for Kun Tao, where she will receive one-on-one instruction 1 hour

weekly for a period of 8 weeks.

IV. Explanation for Extent of Participation with Non-disabled Children -

Since Darrylle does not have the necessary coordination and skills

to perform with the entire class, she will receive individualized

instruction for the first eight weeks.

V. Assessment -

Darrylle will participate in the district wide assessment with the

exception of assessments for Kun Tao. As she is not able to

perform to the standardized testing for Kun Tao, her progress

will be assessed by the rubric in VIII.

VI. Date and Related Information for Services -

Darrylle will begin services on Tuesday, September 7th and continue

until Tuesday, October 26th. During this period, she will receive

individualized instruction for 1 hour weekly.

VIII. Assessments Periods & Rubrics -

Darrylle will be assessed on the following rubrics to be done on -

9/7, 10/5, and 10/26.

IX. How Parents will be Informed -

Journal Entry #1 ~ Tuesday, September 14, 1999

Content of the Lesson

On our first night of learning, Ronnie explained to me the things that I would hopefully be able to do by the end of this experiment. His goal was to teach me various stances, punches, blocks, kicks and throws. After I picked my jaw up off the floor, he then began the class by starting with 100 jumping jacks, then stretching exercises, flexibility exercises, and various balancing routines. We then worked on some basic moves ~ stances, punches and kicks, and after about 1 and 1/4 hours, I called it quits. (We were working in the basement, and it was very warm, and Ronnie warned that I would be quite sore the next day - I was, and for a few days after)

Helpful Aspects

As stated earlier, Ronnie teaches classes to adults and children and therefore exhibits a great deal of patience - a trait that I am sure to exhaust. He also has a great sense of humor, which helps in my clumsiness, and attempts to learn. Ronnie was also very thorough in his explanations and demonstrations of what I should be doing, and did not laugh too hard when I messed up.

Negative Aspects

Being slow to start, there was not too much that Ronnie could have said or done to slow me down further. However, I was personally a little overwhelmed in the beginning when we were discussing all the things that I would be learning - hopefully.

Feelings

I went into the first lesson with a good attitude, and really wanting to learn. As I have a great relationship with my brother, I knew that he was a smart choice for my teacher. After the first lesson, and for the next few days, I was sore, as he said I would be, because I had bent parts of my body I didn't know could be bent. I think, however, that the fun we put into the lesson made it work well, and I am looking forward to next week, and to eventually being able to throw Ronnie.

Journal Entry #7 ~ Tuesday, October 26, 1999

Content of the Lesson

As tonight was our final lesson, Ron decided to quiz me on the various things that we had worked on over the last several weeks. He would call out various positions, and I would need to demonstrate the proper way of doing that particular move. When it came to throwing him, I was actually able to do so - but as mentioned before, due to the cement floor - did not follow through all the way.

Helpful Aspects

As in all the other lessons, Ronnie demonstrated incredible patience, which I think was most helpful. As mentioned before, repetition played a huge part in the ìsuccessî of this experiment. We did everything in a format that was easy to follow, as well as being very logical. All these things combined, made for instruction that was easy to understand, and relatively easy to carry out.

Negative Aspects

Tonight's lesson went extremely well, with no interruptions or time constraints. As a result, there were no negative aspects to speak of.

Feelings

I am very proud of the progress that I have made. Admittedly, I still have much to learn, but looking back at the first journal entry, I think that the accomplishments that we have reached speak to Ronnieís ability to teach. I never would have thought that I would be able to learn what I did. We have decided to carry on with these lessons, and see how far I can go.
