I. Master of Science Degree in School Counseling, or Master of Science Degree in Community Counseling (Click on this title to access more information on the program.)


MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN SCHOOL COUNSELING

The school counselor master's and certification program (51 credit hours) prepares the student to work as a school counselor at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. All school counseling students complete practicum and part-time internship experiences. Students who have not taught at least 3 years must complete a full-time, one year internship. 

The school counseling program prepares students to deliver comprehensive developmental counseling services in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social development, and includes teaching students a guidance curriculum, individual planning, responsive services and systems support. 

MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN COMMUNITY COUNSELING

The program in community counseling (51credits hours) prepares the student to work in a variety of community counseling agencies or college counseling centers. Students develop skills and theoretical knowledge in doing individual, group and career counseling with diverse populations in either public and private community mental health agencies, or colleges and universities. All community counseling students complete practicum and internship experiences. Students specializing in counseling work in community mental health settings find practicum and
internship placements in a variety of settings, including community counseling centers, child guidance centers, crisis stabilization programs, rape crisis and domestic violence programs, substance abuse programs, youth services programs and inpatient and residential treatment programs. Students specializing in counseling in higher education find placements in community colleges as well as public and private college and university counseling and career services centers. 

Both the community and the school counseling programs are accredited by the Council on the
Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) which is the accrediting body of the American Counseling Association. Students who complete the master of science in Community or School Counseling are prepared to take the National Certified
Counselor's examination. This examination is used by many states for certification or licensure of community counselors. 

II. Master's Degree in Social Work  (Click on this title to access more information on the program.)

The Master of Social Work program, which is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, provides students with specific knowledge and skill for advanced professional practice of social work. The graduate will be prepared for leadership roles in social work practice, and will be skillful in management, policy and program planning, and social work research. Graduates will be qualified for employment by both public and private agencies on local, state and national levels. The curriculum is designed to encourage innovative responses to human and social need.

 

III. Master's Degree in Public Health (Click on this title to access more information on the program.)

The mission of the field of public health is to protect and improve the health of communities by assuring, through organized community efforts, living conditions in which people can be healthy and address health problems effectively. The Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree program contributes to this cause by offering a planned program of study that provides students with a strong, general background in areas of knowledge which are basic to public health and
opportunities to acquire skills and experience in the application of basic community health education concepts and knowledge to the solution of community health problems. The program is designed to prepare health and human service professionals who can provide leadership in primary prevention. Focus is placed on developing the capacity to plan, administer, and evaluate health promotion and disease prevention interventions and programs. The Master of Public Health in Community Health Education is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. 

Master's Degree in Urban Studies (Click on this title to access more information on the program.)

The Master of Science degree program in Urban Studies is designed to prepare students for professional practice and responsible roles in the broad range of governmental and private sector activities including:  city planning and urban revitalization, urban government management and economic development, human resource services, urban education, inter-group relations, and community development.
