Cooperative Education

The Cooperative Education Office is located in Schwartz Hall, Rm. 102.  Their staff describes their very helpful program in this way:

"Cooperative Education is an educational program that integrates academic study with related professional experience. Co-op students have the opportunity to earn money and academic credit for their work, while gaining valuable professional experience.

To be eligible for a co-op, students must have completed a minimum of 60 credits and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0. Co-op opportunities can last for a semester, summer, or six months and can be part time or full time. Co-op jobs are in fields such as accounting, art, communications, computer science, chemistry, journalism, public relations, human resources, sales, and marketing and finance, to name a few.

The Cooperative Education work experience is a valuable tool in career decision making. It gives the student an opportunity to try out career options prior to graduation. After graduation, students usually find that their co-op position makes them more attractive to prospective employers. In addition, they often receive higher salary offers than students without co-op experience."  Call 392-6540 to make an appointment, or just stop by Schwartz Hall 102.

Internships

Internships are generally non-paying jobs related to the work you may want to do after graduation.  Although it's more desirable to be paid than not to be paid for your work, any work related experience can be very helpful to you in landing a desirable job after graduation.

To explore internships on line, you  might  start with Altavista's site by clicking on:
Internships.  There you will find information on summer internships, paid internships, and international internships.  Many enterprising students do the research needed via the internet and other sources so that they create their own internships, which later on lead to post-graduation, full-time jobs.

Don't forget about books!  Another good resource is the book Also, take a look at the book Internship Success, by Marianne Ehrlich Green.  S.C.S.U. students or alumni can borrow a copy from the Foreign Languages Department Careers Library, located in EN 101-I, in the office of Dr. Sandra Grant, the Foreign Language Department's Career Advisor for Non-Teaching Jobs.
