more about yourself, your interests, values, and abilities, and how these relate
to various career areas.
Unless you already know what profession interests you, get more information
through the Discover Program in the Counseling Services
Office in Engleman Hall, Rm. 238. Call 392-5475 to make an appointment.
Visit the Career
Services Office in Schwartz Hall 102, and ask to be shown what
resources they offer. Look at the books in their library, and ask to be shown
the on-line services.
Visit Dr. Grant’s Office (EN 101-I) and
sign up for an appointment to talk with her about your interests. Or
e-mail her at Grant_s@SouthernCT.edu
She has a library of helpful books. Talk with her about these books. Take out a
book. Read the book.
Attend the career fairs in the fall and spring semesters, just to see what they
are like. Attend at least one workshop on resume writing or interviewing.

help you to learn more about yourself and the careers which might interest you.

Familiarize yourself with Internet sources – the Career Services Office will
guide you.
Consider taking CTR 200.
Continue informational interviewing; expand your network.
Be sure to cross train to increase your
marketability; take a computer science course.
Visit the Career Services Office for orientation on the job search.
Plan to do an internship or co-op in your preferred field.

Narrow
and finalize career choice.
Prepare for graduate or professional school.
Research labor market information.
Narrow down job targets by company or organization.
Register with the Career
Services Office.
Develop a file of references from employers and professors.
Research a minimum of 3 organizations and jobs.
Complete an internship if you haven’t done so already.
Make an appointment with a Career Services Office Professional if you haven’t
done so already.

If you have done your homework (research and self-study) early on, you will make
an easy and happy transition to the job market. But if you started late,
don't despair! It will just take you a little longer. Follow the
steps outlined above, and you'll do well!
