For more than ten years the S.C.S.U. French Club has been serving as a cultural and social outlet for those students, faculty, and staff who are interested in the Francophone world. We have always attracted a strong component of Continuing Education students. Meetings are held twice or four times a month, depending on the programs offered, and attendance varies from ten to thirty. Refreshments of French food are served. No one need be a French student to come to the Club. English is the language spoken at meetings and events so that all the community may feel comfortable about participating. Films are sub-titled and speakers present in English. We feature two major trips a year (generally to New York) each including transportation and dinner in addition to the play, opera, or musical. The return home from these trips includes the special touch of home baked French pastries and some fruit.  Dr. Constance Ecklund helped launch the Club and is its current advisor. 1998-1999 was an exciting year, and a description of it will give you some idea of what kinds of activities will be available next year:

Dr. Ecklund reports:

"After the Fall Club Fair debut, we attended a special presentation at Yale by Pierre Capretz, showcasing his soon-to-be-published CD-Rom program on Camus’ L’étranger. We also had a talk by internationally known mezzo, Tobé Malawista, whose subsequent concert at the Yale Art Gallery we attended. The December holidays began with trip to see the Cloisters and Les misérables in New York, and after a culinary demonstration by chef Pablo Sevilla of bûche de Noël we closed the term by our annual singing in Engleman of French carols.

The Spring term again featured Chef Sevilla, this time with a very sophisticated program of French salads and dressings. We then devoted several meetings to the award-winning film, "Indochine," preparing us for the Spring trip to see Miss Saigon as well as to visit the Metropolitan Museum's Asian collection. We were honored to receive our third Cultural Award from the University.
