At present six of our students are studying in Baden-Würtemberg. German is the only Foreign Languages Department section that regularly sponsors several year-long exchanges abroad.

German majors receive excellent language training and exposure to the culture by living abroad. At their German universities, they always take several intensive course to perfect their spoken  and written German and courses to gain access to local and national history and civilization. In literature they study mostly Romantic to contemporary writers. The courses are designed for foreign students from different countries. but our students also study other disciplines – such as history, philosophy, art, and chemistry – together with German students.

While abroad, most students communicate with us in German by FAX or telephone, and we can check their progress. Upon their return from Germany, all speak fluently. Returning students speak with enthusiasm to German classes or the German Club about their experience, and many return to Germany for a second academic year or visit. After their intensive experience with language and culture in Germany, students find greatly enhanced job opportunities upon their return to the United States.
