Combining your foreign language major with a helpful minor, or minors

If you want to be in demand as an employee when you graduate from Southern as a Spanish, French, Italian or German major, you need to be "cross-trained," that is, you need to study more than just the foreign language.  At the moment, the demand for Spanish high school teachers is greater than the supply.  But our alumni have told us that even if you intend to be a teacher, it's a good idea to develop other areas of expertise as well, so that when you graduate you have more than one option.

For nearly every job which currently exists, you need to acquire more than one set of skills. If you want to be a foreign language teacher, you must know the foreign language, but also learn classroom management and other teaching skills. If you want to be a translator or interpreter,  you need training in these areas. If you want to work in the business world, you will eventually combine your foreign language knowledge of  marketing, management, accounting, finance, and/or computer science.  At Southern, you have good opportunities to learn what  you'll need.

LIBERAL STUDIES. (Click on this title to get to the S.C.S.U. undergraduate catalog, Liberal Studies section.)

The Liberal Studies degree allows a student to combine two minors (in the B.A. program) or three minors (in the B.S. program), instead of taking one major.  This allows a student, therefore to study combinations of fields, such as

Spanish/Marketing/Computer Science
Spanish/Psychology/Communications
German/Finance/Computer Science
French/Political Science/Economics
French/Art History/Management
Italian/Art History/Management

instead of one major.  So a student could develop considerable expertise in a foreign language a culture (preferably with study abroad), and also expertise in one or two other areas as well.  The Career Services Office, and our alumni suggest that these could be powerful combinations.

I. MINOR IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION  (Click on this title to get to the S.C.S.U. undergraduate catalog, Business School section, which will lead you to information on the Minor in Business Administration.)

The minor in business administration consists of a minimum of 18-19 business credits to be chosen with the advice of a School of Business adviser.  A plan of study should be prepared in advance that reflects the student's career objectives.  The student selects four courses with four different prefixes from a list of accounting, economics, finance, management, management information systems, and marketing courses.  Two additional courses in accounting, economics, management, management information systems, or marketing should be chosen with advisement.

II.  MINOR IN COMPUTER SCIENCE (Click on this title to get to the S.C.S.U. undergraduate catalog, Business School section, which will lead you to information on the Minor in Computer Science.)

The minor consists of 18 credits, beginning with CSC 101, or 140 or 150 or 152. The minor may be used to effect entry into a computer-related career, or, to enhance the student's study in another discipline. A variety of course sequences can be constructed to meet the particular interests of students. The department advisors should be consulted for assistance in constructing such sequences.

III.  MINOR IN COMMUNICATIONS.  The minor in communication consists of 18 credits.  The student selected two courses from COM 250, 255, 310 or 497, one course from each of the three professional tracks in Communication (Management, Marketing, Communications, and Communication Technologies), and one additional course in communication.

IV. MINOR IN PSYCHOLOGY

The minor is Psychology can be an excellent background for those interested in human services, particularly if they intend to earn a graduate degree in Counseling, Social Work, or School Health.

Spanish majors interested  in the human services area, should consider the Master's Degree in Social WorkMaster's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, the  Master's Degree in Counseling and School Psychology, or the minor in  School Health.  Check out these catalog sites, and then speak with someone in the relevant department in order to find out as much as you can about these very interesting (and often high-paying) fields.

To complete the minor in Psychology, in addition to Psychology 100, 101, or 102, students may select any five psychology courses, provided they have the necessary prerequisites for each course.

V.  MINOR IN LIBRARY SCIENCE.  Any language major is well-combined with library science.  The minor in Library-Information Service may be used as a pre-professional preparation for those intending to do graduate work in library science,  and as a career oriented concentration for students in a liberal arts program, such as French, German, Italian or Spanish.
