Heather Burns became the first repeat winner of the 2001 season, scampering the 2.4 miles in just 15:46, a 6:34 per mile pace. Burns led start to finish. Second place Kimberly Thompson, a little over half a minute back, described the race as "I never saw her."
Among the men, Mike Abraham led a fairly fast start that had the lead pack whittled to just three people, Abraham, Ed Sandifer and Roxbury first-timer Jeff Johnson of Wallingford. As they climbed the hill towards Chalybes Road, Abraham alternated going fast and going slower. The three crested the hill, facing the downhill run on Chalybes together. Abraham and Johnson, though, didn't have their downhill shoes on, and Sandifer plummeted to a solid lead as Johnson eased past Abraham. Sandifer faded right at the end, on Apple Lane, but by then he had extended his lead enough to hold on for a ten-second win.
