It was a chilly, rainy morning.
Before the race, everybody was picking former New Milford HS star Kevin
Harrington to run away with this week's Roxbury race. Kevin, though,
had
a long season at Central and wasn't ready to bang heads, so when Mike took them
through the first mile in 5:23, Kevin just backed off and finished fourth.
Slow closing Ed Sandifer had been 45 seconds behind at the 2 mile mark, when the
fast start began to make Abe's legs heavier and heavier. The Old Fossil
narrowed the gap to about ten seconds, but Abe had it in him for a strong finish
and won by 20 seconds. In the bitter rivalry between Abe and Ed, Ed won
the first five contests of the season, but Mike's blown him away nine times
since then. Sounds like it's time for the Old Fossil to start shopping for
rocking chairs.
It was a familiar story among the women. Pam Quist is strong, and she just wore down poor Lynn Zuback, who finished a minute and a half back.
Welcome back Jay Kuenzle. Some of you look where you're running, so you may not have noticed his mailbox on the right, near the first mile mark on South Street. Jay brought the family this week.
Nine Roxbury runners ran Boston last month. Eight finished. You can see how they did at the Roxbury at Boston site.
This week's winner, Mike Abraham, is pictured at the right. After the race, he wasn't smiling like this. He was tired.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on CoolRunning.com and on HiTekRacing.com.
