8.2 miles - Squire Road July 21, 2001 |
|
Both second place finishers this week,
Kyle Gancher and rookie Dave Cilley would have rather the race ended at Judd's
Bridge, instead of having to turn around and run back up the hill. Both
saw leads of better than 30 seconds evaporate on the hill and in the heat, but
both held on for second place finishes.
In Kyle's case, first she was caught about the bridge by her anniversary celebrations of the previous evening. Happy Anniversary, Kyle. Then about a mile later she was caught by the steady determination of Rapid Lynn Zuback.
The Men's race was exciting. Rookies Dave Cilley and Greg Quinn took an early lead, to be joined at the mile mark by Ed Sandifer. Good thing, because he was the only one in the lead pack who knew the way. They dumped him at the two mile mark, since the rest of the course was clear and they didn't need a navigator any more. About 50 yards later, Dangerous Ken Merrick passed him, too. Dave pulled into the lead, and that was how things stayed for the next four and a half miles. Greg started to crumble a bit on the long hill, and he was passed first by Ken, then by Ed, but Dave's lead looked secure.
Ken earned his nickname "Dangerous", though, and when the Cramp Hodag got Dave, Ken pounced and ran away to a ten second victory. The Old Fossil couldn't find the legs to take advantage of poor Dave's misfortune, so Dave held on to take second place by an 18 second margin.
This week's photo is Al Mletzko and Carl Hunt sprinting towards the finish line. Last week it wasn't so close, as Al clobbered Carl by two places and 44 seconds. This week, though, Carl turned the tables and won by two places and 58 seconds. This vicious rivalry will continue in two weeks, as we are taking next week off for the New Milford Race.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on CoolRunning.com and on HiTekRacing.com.

a bonus picture at the bottom of the page. Nora Hulton checks her

faster on a flat five miler, Nora!
