2001 Roxbury Race #25

4.5 miles - Up Chalybes, down Hemlock

Zuback Win Streak at 4

Rapid Lynn Zuback hasn't lost at Roxbury in more than a month, since Kyle Gancher picked her off on July 14.  The four race streak is the longest at Roxbury in several years.  People are starting to notice, and maybe they'll remember in November when it comes time to vote for Most Improved Runner.  She's got to be looking over her shoulder, though, as Peg Molina, finally showing signs of recovery, is only half a minute back.

Among the men, there was a huge pack of about ten runners at the mile mark as they went past Booth Free School.  The pack broke up a bit going up the big hill on Chalybes.  Then, cresting the top of the hill, the Old Fossil made what should have been a race-winning move, opened up a ten yard gap on his pursuers, and went scrambling down the other side of the hill as fast as his withered old legs would carry him.  It almost worked, but high school half milers Jon Freeman and Adam Levy caught him about half way down.  The Fossil tried to explain to them that his was a clever move born of years of experience and that they shouldn't have been able to catch him.  They laughed at him, and they all ran together for a while.

Passing Booth Free School with a mile to go, Sandifer tried it again.  He accelerated, but he only made the high school kids mad.  With half a mile to go, Freeman and Levy started to pull away, ignoring it when the Fossil reminded them that they were only 1/3 his age and then called them names like "Punk" and "Twerp".  They just went faster.  Freeman, a junior at New Milford High School, pulled away from Levy with a quarter of a mile to go and went on to win by 12 seconds.  He ran the last mile in a quite respectable 5:25.

Keyless boB Derringer won a fierce battle for fifth place with former Brookfield star JT Schemm, inching away to win by about a foot.  JT has moved back to the area from Newton, Mass and will be teaching chemistry and biology at New Milford High School.  We can assure you that the main reason he moved back to the area was so he could run the Roxbury races.  His wife's job at the Kent School and his own opportunity at NMHS are only coincidental.

This sad news from Betsy Daniels is late, but important to share

Hi Ed,
Just wanted to share with you some sad news in case you or any other Roxbury racers haven't heard. Heather & Shannon Burns, who have participated (and won) some of the Roxbury Road Races, just lost their father, Paul Burns. The plane he was piloting out in Washington State crashed right after take off. He and 4 passengers on board died. I'm not sure exactly what day this past week as I was on vacation. The Burns are next door neighbors of my sisters and I knew Joyce (the wife). The arrangements should be in Thursday's paper, but I was told that there are calling hours (in Woodbury?) on Sunday and a Memorial service on Monday. If I find out more I will e-mail you. I will not be at the race on Sat 8/4, as I have out of town dog shows this weekend, so if you need any additional info e-mail me. Have a good race Sat.
Betsy

This week's photo is Bob Satterlee, giving us the thumbs up sign back in March.  Bob left his headlights on before the race this week.  Somebody (no idea who it could be) took pity on him, though, and turned them off for him.

The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on CoolRunning.com and on HiTekRacing.com.

This week's Roxbury results  We had some trouble with the results this week, as our fancy new printer stop watch fritzed out part way through.  Please send any corrections to the web guy.
