4.8 miles - Judd's Bridge Road October 20, 2001 |
|
Teachers took the first four places in the
men's race and won the women's race in this week's 4.8 mile Roxbury Road
Race. New Milford Social Studies teacher Mike Abraham returned to the
Speed Zone after a long absence, and took the lead from
the word "Go!" After about half a mile, New Fairfield Social
Studies Teacher Marty Ogden took off to try to hunt him down, but only managed
to keep him in sight for the entire race, finishing 19 seconds back. New
Milford Science teacher made his break on the Old Fossil after a mile, and
managed to cut his deficit on Marty to just nine seconds, but the race ended
before he caught him Fossil finished fourth. Some of you know that
in real life, Fossil teaches mathematics at Western Connecticut State
University.
Meanwhile, New Fairfield elementary school teacher Pam Quist had a comfortable two-minute win over Peg Molina and a resting-for-a-marathon Kyle Gancher. Quite a day for teachers.
Regular winner Ken Merrick ran his first marathon at Hartford a week ago, 3:13. He described it as the most difficult thing he has ever done. It slowed him a bit in this week's race.
Congratulations Ken, and good luck Kyle.
We'd be grateful for clues on who "Jeff" is in 23rd place. "Jeff" is Jeff Field, who rode his bicycle over Good Hill Road from Woodbury to run our race. He got there a little late, and so didn't know to sign up on the entry form. All is well, now. Welcome to Roxbury, "Jeff".
Click here for news of sometime Roxbury runner Joan Murphy, living this fall in Siberia. Joan is the daughter of Roxbury Regular John Murphy Jr, and was a cross country and track star for New Milford High School.
This week's upper photo is Scott Benjamin, before the race, with the hot air balloon about to be launched behind him. That's a sign of the cool, still autumn mornings here in Roxbury. The middle photo is Ron Carl, after a strong finish, in front of the beautiful Hurlburt Park sign. Way at the bottom of the page is Betsy Daniels, smiling because she only has about a quarter of a mile to go.
The Roxbury Races are now
listed on the Internet both on CoolRunning.com
