2.4 miles - Down Chalybes December 1, 2001 |
|
Record setting heat and a blistering
pace by Pat Dennen made the last race of the Silver Anniversary year Roxbury
Road Race Season a memorable one. Pat's 12:56 was the fastest time on the
2.4 mile course in several years, and threatened the ten-year old course record
of 12:40. Three more times under 14 minutes hasn't happened for a while,
either. After a quarter of a mile, though, the only race was for second
place.
And an exciting race for second place it
was. Occasional runner Dave Harvey and New Milford High School star John
Freeman dueled viciously. Freeman had the advantage going
down the big
hill, but Harvey made it up quickly on the flats. It came down the last
half mile. John Freeman can run a 2:01 half mile. Dave Harvey
can't. John got second place. Dave got third.
Kyle Gancher. now recovered from her two fall marathons, edged Peg Molina by 25 seconds to capture her fifth win of the season.
Keyless boB Derringer picked off his nemesis the Old Fossil this week. First, boB thwarted the Fossil's big move to get away going down Chalybes, and then he kicked poor Fossil in the last quarter mile for an eight second margin. Of course, Fossil, whiner that he is, noted that Keyless had both of his kids, Garrett and Kaya there cheering for him, and that had to give boB a big lift. BoB's 6:00 pace is his fastest of the season.
The field of 57 finishers is the largest on record, eclipsing the 55 who ran on April 14. There are rumors that a field of 71 once ran in the 1970's. We're still trying to find the record books on that one, though.
Today's photo gallery features Chris "Critter" Powderly at the top, powering his way to the finish line. Center right is this week's winner, Kyle Gancher. Below is Paul Teixeira. A pretty happy looking bunch, aren't they? They're all smiling (except Chris) because they are looking forward to next year's season. Chris is unhappy because he has to wait so long to run Roxbury again. Don't worry, Chris. The Roxbury Races will resume on Saturday, February 16, 2002 at our new starting time of 8:30. Please be prompt.
We're missing some ages in this week's results (and a few others over the year.) If you know any of these ages, please eMail me. Also, I try to mark women finishers in yellow, but sometimes I make mistakes or don't know. If you see anybody mislabeled or unlabeled, please eMail me about that, too.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on CoolRunning.com and on HiTekRacing.com.
