3.55 miles - down Hemlock March 23, 2002 |
|
Jose Torres Brandao and Sue Faber had never run in Roxbury before.
Sometimes, rookies get confused on Roxbury's many turns and hills, and go
straight when the course turns. That didn't happen this week, as both
Rookies won, logging times faster than last week's winners managed on the same
course.
Sue Faber grabbed her lead at the start. Her only misstep was as she took the first corner, she cut the corner tight, not knowing about the brambles leaning out over the road to scratch unsuspecting runners' legs. That was the only threat she faced, as she beat last week's winner Pam Quist by three minutes.
Among the men, JT Schemm took the early lead. After about 3/4 mile, as they cruised down Hemlock, Jose joined him and shadowed him until they reached Apple Lane. By then, there were no navigational problems left, and Jose dropped the hammer and pulled away for an 11 second victory.
Spring is here, so, this being New England, conditions were the coldest of the winter. Thermometers hovered around 25 degrees, and there was a nasty wind out of the south and west as they started. Twenty minutes later, the wind suddenly died and the temperature crawled higher, so all the runners who had started shivering despite wearing all the running clothes they owned finished the race warm and comfortable. Who knows what next week will bring.
This week's upper photo features women's winner Sue Faber trying to warm up before the race with Mike Abraham and Dan Lamb. Mike and Sue finished the race just two seconds apart. Dan finished just six seconds away from the second place woman, Pam Quist. The lower photo is Betsy Daniels signing up before the race.
