College Kid Conquers Crowd
Georgetown University senior-to-be Ethan Kearns brought his elite Division I
talent to Roxbury this week, and found a larger than usual and deeper than usual
crowd waiting for him. Almost sixty runners toed the line on an
almost-hot, almost-sunny
summer
morning that was perfect for running.
Ethan wore the orange "Tigers" jersey that he had worn when he starred for Ridgefield High School. He found his best competition in Rob Murray, track coach at arch-rival Danbury High School, and in Pete Matthiessen, who will be Captain of the New Milford cross country team this fall. Pete's teammate, Reid McEwen, took fourth.
Pretty Quick Pam Quist beat a fairly strong field to take the women's title this week. In her wake, she left Peg Molina, Mary-Alex Zickefoose and Brookfield HS star Sarah Thomas.
In the Bitter Rivalries department, Keyless boB Derringer turned the tables on Mike Abraham this week. Bob hadn't beat Abe since February, like 20 races ago. Keyless also beat JT Schemm, but JT had a pretty bad race this week. It was so bad for JT that even the Fossil beat him.
It's great to have Tom McNulty and Tony Benivegna finally back in action. Both had been watching Roxbury from the Web while recovering from rather long injuries.
We had a few problems with people's ages this week. If you know how old some of these people are, or if you ARE some of these people and are willing to tell, some people care. It's a hot buzz, for example, that Steve Benoit will be turning 50 on August 12, and so will be in the same age group as the Fossil. Are you getting those invitations to join AARP yet, Steve?
There will be no Roxbury race next week, July 27. Too many people want to run the New Milford race instead. Our next race will be 4.3 miles on August 3 at 8:30 am.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on CoolRunning.com and on HiTekRacing.com.
