Levy Lays Back, Wins Late
Keyless boB Derringer was off like a shot
from the start of this week's 4.3 mile race, as the rest of the field began at a
more leisurely pace. Don't let it fool you, boB. Those three kids,
two from college, one from high school, lurking in your wake, were just being
patient.
Once boB got swept aside, it looked like it would be New Milford graduates Pete Gillen and Kevin Harrington finishing 1-2, ahead of high schooler Adam Levy. Adam, though, caught Kevin on the hill, then Pete fell behind just as they were turning on to Apple Lane, and the excellent 800 meter legs of the high school star put 14 seconds on poor Pete in the last half mile of the race.
Farther back, Keyless boB held on to beat his arch-rival Mike Abraham for the third time in four weeks, this time by 19 seconds. Our picture is from last week, when Mike was ahead, about to be caught by Keyless. Welcome back from the honeymoon, Mike.
Adam led a bevy of Levy's in this week's race. (Those of you who know that it's a flock of birds, a pod of whales, a pride of lions, and were wondering what to call several Levy's, now you know. It's a "bevy." Their population of four certainly was conspicuous, but several others made Roxbury a family event. We had three Gancher's (though one rode along beside on a bicycle), and two each among the Harrington's, Matthews's and Gillen's. The top woman and the top three men all had other family in the race.

Happy 50th Birthday to Steve Benoit, who led the age group for three and a half of the 4.3 miles today, before being overtaken by the Old Fossil. We'd like to report that the two staged a titanic and graceful duel over the last mile of the course, but in fact, it was just two tired and sweaty runners staggering up a big hill on a hot and humid morning. One staggered about eight seconds faster.
In automotive news, we note Betsey Daniels driving the red VW convertable she got for her birthday. That reminds us that last week, Nora was driving the big, white 1952 Ford pickup. Also, Keyless boB was driving his wife's nice new car with, guess what? ... Keyless entry! No more locking those keys in the car, eh, boB?
Those eight seconds were enough for new father JT Schemm to slip in between the two Veteran runners. Pictures of the new Schemm, Jonas, are posted on the web.
Happy birthday also to Rapid Lynn Zuback, now preparing for the Hartford Marathon the second week of October. Good luck with the training.
