Leftovers win team race
For at least ten years, Roxbury has had
something like a team race. It started as a relay, back when the race
began
at Booth Free School. That was taking a long time, so after a few years,
it became a three-person team race, adding up the times to determine the winning
team. For a long time, we tried to balance the teams so that each team had
a strong runner, a medium runner and a slower runner. That never really
turned out very balanced, so starting in 2001, teams were just whoever wanted to
be a team. Now, in 2002, with the larger fields, we decided to expand
teams to four people, and still let people pick teams however they wanted to.
The Bevy of Levy's had a tough choice. There are five of them, and only four could be on the family team. They kicked Mom (Janet) out. The team of Bob Lewis, Katie Neils and Ed Sandifer had been together for several years. They stayed together and added Dave DeBoy to the team (pictured at the right). Gisela and Ben Boelhouer wanted to be on the same team. They added friend Sharon Gawe and the newly single Janet Levy (see above.) Bob Derringer, Paul Teixeira, Gregg Scribner and Ken Merrick are friends, so they formed a team. After eight teams had been formed, four people remained, just like in high school gym class.
What was it about Mike Abraham that made nobody want to run with them? Slow? Unpopular? Different? Doesn't that describe all of us? Well, of course, these leftovers ran away with the race, won the team prize by 22 seconds over the Derringer, Teixeira, Scribner and Merrick team.
In the individual race, nobody was surprised to see Mike Abraham, Bob Derringer and JT Schemm in the top three places. After all, they've all had life-improving changes in their lives lately. Abe got married earlier this month, just days from the time JT had his first child, young Jonas (who visited Roxbury last week), and Keyless boB has a really hot pair of fast silver racing shoes.
Welcome back to Ken Merrick and Vernon LeRoux, sixth and fourth respectively today, missing since March and April with a combination of injury and Lyme disease.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet both on CoolRunning.com and on HiTekRacing.com.
