Pam and Abe Yet Again
Mike and Pam won again. For the first
quarter of a mile or so, it looked like Keyless Bob would try to keep up with
Abe, but then suddenly
Abe
had a 25 yard lead that gradually grew to 31 seconds by the end of the
race. In August, the pair were evenly matched, running about 6:05 a
mile. Since then, Keyless got about three seconds faster, but Abe has
shaved ten seconds a mile off his pace, and now he makes it look easy. Abe
was nearly 20 seconds faster this week than he was last week on the same course.
PQ Pam Quist was three seconds slower this week than she was last week. Last week, astute readers may recall, she started very fast. This week, she started a tad slower. Runners' Wisdom says that better runners start slower, finish faster, but that advice didn't work for Pam this week. In a rare simultaneous appearance, both Pam Quist and Peg Molina both ran this week, as well as Kyle Gancher, who has been missing for several weeks. Kyle and Peg are separated by only 11 points in the Points race.
For the first time since he turned 50, Steve Benoit picked off the Fossil this week. For a at least the next week now, Steve's the best in that 50-59 age groupl
We left the camera at home this week, and
so we missed some opportunities for some
good
photos. Besides missing the shot of Pam and Peg together (some people
still don't believe they aren't really the same person, like Clark Kent and
Superman), we could have had a fine picture of New Milford High School Cross
Country Parents, as Peg and Kyle were joined after the race by parents of alumni
Bill Gillen and John Murphy. All had plenty to brag about, since the New
Milford Boys are ranked among the top ten in the state, and are looking pretty
strong.
Corinne Bellemare ran the Equinox Marathon in Fairbanks, Alaska last week. It was a difficult marathon with lots of hills and ice at the top of the highest one. The race director ran the marathon himself and had to be treated for hypothermia at the top. He finished anyway. Corinne tells us that some of the people who run marathons like that are a little bit crazy. We don't know what you're talking about, Corinne. Nobody at Roxbury is even a little bit crazy, are we?
Corinne has started her recovery program, planning to run the Detroit Marathon in two weeks, along with Walt Schuttler, Carl Hunt and Kyle Gancher. Mo van Moffaert and Lynn Zuback are looking towards Hartford, and Peg Molina is looking at Philadelphia. Some of the 50-state crew are going to Maryland for a marathon soon, but I don't have details yet. Makes you think maybe Corinne is right about some people, doesn't it?
Our upper picture is Gregg Scribner, now leading Scott Benjamin 21-11 on the season. To the left is Al Mletzko being pursued by his shadow. Down below we have Rapid Lynn Zuback, getting ready for the Hartford Marathon in October, and below that is Paul Teixeira, who, in contrast to Al Mletzko, is chasing his shadow. Hope you catch it, Tex!
