Abe and Peg Beat Chill
The first real chill of the fall brought
out the gloves and the long sleeves at this week's 3.55 mile Roxbury Road
Race.
It
didn't change the results much, as Mike Abraham won yet again, and hapless Bob
Derringer finished second, yet again. Poor Bob must be feeling a bit like
the Washington Generals, perennial adversaries of the Harlem Globetrotters.
We've been saying that Bob has been getting faster, but that Mike has been getting more faster. Both were just a shade slower this week, but the result was the same. Bob held on for almost half a mile, but then Abe pulled away and opened a big lead.
Among the women, last week's winner, Nora Hulton, yielded her crown to Peg Molina. Peg was celebrating her son Pete's big race this week, leading the New Milford Boys Cross Country Team to the SWC Championship at Bethel this week. It was supposed to be a "rebuilding" year. It must be all those Roxbury races those kids ran this year. All those Roxbury races those guys ran last summer are paying off in a big way. Good luck at States next weekend.
Our own Scott Benjamin has been running with the Abbott Tech cross country team, too, and they won their conference championship as well, for the first time since 1981.
We have only partial results from last week's Hartford Marathon. Rapid Lynn Zuback ran faster than she meant to for 17 miles, then met the monster and had to slow down a bit. She held it together in the face of distress and wet weather and met her goals with a 3:41 first marathon. Congratulations, Lynn.
We hear rumors that Gregg Scribner will try
his first marathon at
next week's Mystic Marathon. Paul Teixeira was giving him lots of
"advice" after today's race, things like "Drink lots of
fluids. Beer is a fluid" and "Don't wear worn out shoes.
Run in brand new ones." We hope you survive Tex's excellent advice,
Gregg. The big question, though: will Gregg miss his first Roxbury
of the year to rest up for his marathon? Where are his priorities?
We have lots of new pictures. Above left is Mike Abraham flying towards the finish line. At the right is Betsy Daniels, handing out sticks at the finish line. Below that is John Kane with a phone pole coming out his head and Mark Andrejczyk breathing down his neck. Down below a bit is Corinne Bellemare, who hasn't run a marathon since Detroit, two weeks ago, and is moving fast enough to make the picture blurry. Below that is marathon virgin Gregg Scribner holding off Scott Benjamin and Chris Childs.
The Roxbury Races are now listed on the Internet on CoolRunning.com and on HiTekRacing.com AND on runningintheusa.com. All the great sites link to RoxburyRaces.com!
