2002 Roxbury Race #37

3.95 Miles - Jeep Trail

November 2, 2002

Abe is Back.  So's Pam

Mike Abraham missed the race last week, but he had an excuse.  His New Milford cross country team was winning the State Class L championship, in excellent form.  Then yesterday, they added third place in the State Open to their trophy case.  Now, he and the team have to continue running while most cross country teams get to rest.  They have to go to Portland, Maine for the New England Championships.

In some of the newspaper articles this week, the New Milford guys have been crediting their experience at Roxbury for some of their success.  We're all glad you remember us, guys, but we really know it's your own hard work and dedication that got you so far.  Just remember, it's supposed to be fun.  Good luck in Maine.

Coach Abe set a good example for this team, though.  He went out hard from the start.  Adam Kozak bravely tried to stay with him for a while, but found his legs burned off by Abe's flaming pace.  Adam held on for fourth place, though he almost got caught and sent to sixth place coming out of the woods.

Andy Morehouse and Chris Brigham found they couldn't race Abe, so they raced each other for second place instead.  Chris lead most of the way, but Andy caught him in the last mile and beat him by just six seconds.

Among the women, Pam Quist edged Lynn Zuback by one place and 104 seconds to take the women's race.

Since this was the Autumn Championship, there were ribbons for all finishers and medals to the top runners in each age group.  Here are the age group results:

Overall Mike Abraham Pam Quist
20-29 Adam Kozak
30-39 Andy Morehouse Lynn Zuback
49-49 Chris Brigham Mo van Moffaert
50-59 Ed Sandifer
60-69 Al Mletzko

Congratulations to Gregg Scribner on his first marathon last week at Mystic.  He is pleased with his 4:07.  He faced the monster near the end after cruising through the half in 1:47.  He had a successful race, despite all that advice Paul Teixeira and Ed Sandifer were giving him last week.  He's even talking about doing another one sometime.  You're nuts, Gregg!  (We mean that as a compliment.)

Our top left photo shows Mike Abraham's style as he approaches the finish line.  On the right is the Fossil, showing why he can't beat Abe any more. His legs don't come off the ground enough.
